If you love great art, you could easliy spend 3-4 hours at the Rijksmuseum. We went there to see the famous Rembrandt painting: The Nightwatch, and stayed for four house, discovering Vermeer and others. And i am a person who usually can't take more than an hour or two in a museum.

You can get the train straight into Amsterdam from the airport. It stops right in the centre of Amsterdam and you can walk out right into the main streets, walk around, take in the area, stop for some lunch or a snack. Visit the Rikjsmuseum. Its a great city just to do some walking.

Friends of mine had a 5 hour layover and they got on a bus at the airport and did a tour around the city by bus and then back tot he airport. They previously had no desire to see Amsterdam, but afterwards had a new appreciation for it, and are planning a trip back to see more!

Don't carry much luggage. Either that or use the lockers. After 9/11 they were still there but check the Schiphol website. ?schiphol.nl

With 8 hours, you can easily do 2-3 things. With 4 hours, I saw the Anne Frank Huis. The lines can be long so get there early. The Rembrandt House was empty and interesting.

Take the train to Centraal Station (Euro2.90 one way) and then the #2 or #5 tram to the Museum District. The Rijksmuseum is a great choice. Then walk a couple of blocks to the Liedespleine and take a canal boat tour. The same #2 and #5 trams will take you back to the station and you can take the train back to Schipol. The train from the airport takes 20 minutes.

Train takes 15 to 25 mins, one every 10 mins during daytime & is faster than a cab at most times of day.
Do NOT go anywhere without a map.A'dam is famously easy to get lost in.
