A friend and I are going to be traveling around Europe here soon and I need help deciding where to go. Neither of us have been to either place so we're up for any of the choices. I would like to eventually come back and study Italian in Italy, but that is just a dream of mine and anything can happen between now and then so I'm not sure if I should go see Paris then go to Italy? Or Italy and Paris? Or Amsterdam then Italy, you get the picture. We also would have to decide where in Italy we would plan on going. I am 20 years old and I will be celebrating my birthday in one of these places. If anyone has any advice on great places to go or websites where I can find cheap airfare in Europe I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you!

Italy is a pretty big place, what city were thinking? I think you'd find plenty to do if you spent part of the time in Amsterdam and the rest in Paris. Not sure what your interests are, but both cities have a lot to offer. Fly into one and out of the other to save having to backtrack. Save Italy for your next trip. Have fun!
It just seems to make more "sense" to me to do Paris and then Amsterdam - especially because the Thalys high speed train goes between the two. You could spend 5 days in Paris, take the Thalys, and then three days in Amsterdam. Fly open-jaw so you don't have to backtrack.
I agree with the above responses. Since you are considering spending more time in Italy at a later date - do just that. It'll give you an excuse to return to Europe!
The Thalys is a good option between Amsterdam and Paris. Amsterdam has a great vibe for you young'uns (have fun!) as well as some fabulous museums, parks, architecture. And, Paris, well, we all know we love Paris for many reasons. You cannot go wrong with these two cities as choices.

Stop in Antwerp, Ghent, or Brugges to see Belgium for a night on your way from Paris to Amsterdam, if you are interested.
I agree that Paris and Amsterdam make the most sense. Even with 8 days you couldn't get a good feel for Italy.
I wouls fly into Amsterdam, take the Thalys to Paris and fly home from Paris. Why/ I find Amsterdam a bit of a let down after Paris so see Paris last.
Paris and Amsterdam make a great trip together and the 3-hr Thalys train trip is easy and comfortable.
Italy is a big country, save that for another trip when you have more time and can visit Rome-Florence-Venice or some combo of the above.
I just got back from a 10-day trip that was 6.5 days in Paris and 3.5 days in Amsterdam, and that was just about right. But I have to agree with mamcalice that Amsterdam first would have been a better way to go. My niece fell in love with Paris and she felt a little let down by Amsterdam afterwards, but if we had done it in the reverse order I think she would have liked A'dam more. Like me, I think she will always find Paris hard to beat.
I would have to second (third, fourth, fifth???) the Paris/AMS school of thought. I, however, have found after 2 trips to both Paris and Amsterdam, that I prefer Amsterdam. Just my opinion, and clearly I'm in the minority.

Me too - totally agree with mamcalise - I've done that exact trip and it is perfect. Fly into Amsterdam - very cool city, but small so 3 days is plenty then beautiful train ride to Paris - which never ever disappoints. Have a blast!
This thread has inspired me to change my plans and also do Amsterdam and then Paris . But also add Antwerp at the beginning (my dream city
) . Antwerp -> Amsterdam -> Paris. So excited!!! Unfortunately Bruges did not make the cut, but Paris sounds so close and irresistible !! And we'll fly into Amsterdam and out of Paris so no backtracking. Love these Fodors forums , they're really SO helpfu!
