747 or 777?
Quick question: Regarding seating arrangements (leg room, likelihood of getting a window or aisle seat vs a middle seat), which airplane is better--a 747 or 777? This is for a flight to Frankfurt from San Francisco over the Christmas holidays.

Thanks!
Shel

I solely depends on which airline - each line has their own configurations. Since you mention a middle seat I assume you are talking about coach. In General I find a 777 more comfortable - simply because they are newer planes. But Coach on a Singapore Airlines 747 (for example) is better than most.

American does have better leg room in coach than in most other lines.

I'm curious about American's advertised extra legroom. Can anyone compare it to United's Economy Plus?

the main difference is that UA Economy Plus is only a few rows and for a premium fare. AA's extra leg room is in every row of coach and you get it even on a discounted consolidator's ticket.

I mean the difference in legroom between the two. As a United Premier member, I get economy plus automatically (and the seat next to me empty if possible) but I was wondering if it's worth it to go out of my way to fly United for that privilege if AA is more convenient.

The following web site will give you some information.
http://businesstravel.miningco.com/msubseat.htm

I can speak only for Air France and te B777 on the Atlanta Paris run. It is terrible in cattle class. I will never fly it again. That is how bad it is.
I rode about 40% of the way home standing up because standing was more comfortable than sitting. My friends who flew over on a B777 and back on the 747 on the same route told me that the 747 was a little better in terms of leg room.
The B777 was a 3 -3 -3 configuration.
Most 747's use a 3 - 4 - 3 set up, except well to the rear of the cattle cabin.
Remember, the 777 only has 2 engines. Granted, they are made by G.E. or Rolls Royce and are supposed to be super reliable but I prefer a plane with 4, especially on a flight over water.

Unless you're a Premier member (we get preferred seating rows, exit rows etc.) with United, I prefer American (I'm also a Platinum with them)....big difference is ALL seats in coach on AA have additional leg room, not just the premier seating as on United. I can't speak for the other airlines, just UA and AA.

I'm a United Premier member and haven't flown on a 777 in a year, but at the time they did not have economy plus seating on those planes and the gate agent told me that there were no plans to put economy plus seating on them in the future.

I just flew a 777 from Denver last month and we had economy plus seating.

Dear Chicken,

Although I can appreciate your logic in preferring a four-engined plane to a two, keep in mind that with four engines you double the chance that something can go wrong.

Earnest the Brave

The G.E. 777 engines certainly aren't 'super reliable'. B.A. had so many problems with them G.E. eventually agreed to purchase the aircraft and lease them back for very little as compensation.
