Hi Everyone! My husband and I are planning to visit family in Slovenia in January/February, so they'll be carting us around to see the beautiful snowy sights. But we are planning to be there for 7 days and take 7 days somewhere else.
I've been looking around the forums for information about Italy in the winter. I've heard from family members and forums that Venice can be gorgeous in the winter, so that is a possible option. Right now the possibilities are wide open. Here are our constraints:
- Looking for good value, nothing fancy, but clean and decent.
- It would be easiest to spend the 7 days in a place that has a regional jet that flies to Ljubljana, Slovenia, or another easy way to get to Ljubljana (or Kranj for that matter).
- Due to it being mid/late winter where we live, some warmth and sunshine would be really nice, but not totally necessary.

What are the kinds of thinks you enjoy doing when you travel?
Hi kja, I was looking for everyone's favorites. But I've found between Mr. Viddy and myself, these are our tendencies:
- If the weather permits, we love to kayak, bike or hike. I'm pretty sure we'll fit in some x-country skiing in Slovenia.
- We like good food and wine, and have vegetarian tendencies but will be flexible while traveling.
- I LOVE hot springs, and if there's a chance to soak I'm there.
- My aunt has a great list of artwork and architecture to see in Rome. It might be a good time to go since we won't have to battle crowds.
- Speaking of which, neither of us like large crowds of people at all (and Venice Carnival is the 1st week of Feb., so we know to avoid that).

I hope others chime in here! My ability to comment on your specific interests is decidedly limited.
Your mention of hot springs within reasonable reach of Slovenia makes me think of Budapest. It's a lovely city, easily worth at least 3 or 4 days, but I'm not sure what you would combine it with to make a good 7-day visit during winter. You might do a search on this board for trip reports that cover both Slovenia and Budapest (and if that doesn't turn up maitaitom's report, search for it separately). I would suspect that options for kayaking and biking would be somewhat limited if you head north - but I think they'll be limited anywhere in this region at this time of year. But I don't know for sure!
You've mentioned Venice and Rome - visiting them would also seem an option in 7 days, although you might consider shifting a day from Slovenia to Rome if you do that (so 6 days in Slovenia, 3 in Venice, 5 in Rome) - or you could shift even more time from Slovenia to Rome if visiting its art and architecture is a priority.

Budapest is what I had in mind when I first read this posting. It is a distance but well worth it. There are so many things to do there and the place has hot springs and spas everywhere...not to mention great food.
IMHO, you can easily spend a week there. If that seems like too much time in one place, take the short train ride, or ferry up the Danube, to Bratislava, Slovakia for a change of pace.
Rome for a week in the winter works too. Rome always works.
Carnival in Venice is amazing but probably not the best time for you to go there if you want to avoid crowds
I would vote for a week in Rome--it sounds as though you have never been there? A week is a good length of time to spend in that amazing city.
