7 days (6 nights) in Iceland in September - suggestions?

My fiancé and I are spending our honeymoon in Iceland in mid-September (16-22), and I'm extremely overwhelmed at everything I'm seeing online. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good 7 day itinerary? We're outdoorsy, and one of the things I'd love to do would be to dogsled (I know it isn't really a "native" thing to Iceland, but we have a Siberian husky at home in Maryland and we have never done it). Other than that, we were planning on renting a car, and probably looking at airbnb for accommodations, but we don't know really where we should attempt to go.

Congrats on your upcoming wedding and honeymoon. You will love Iceland and there is much to do there.

We visited Reykavik for a day when we docked there on a cruise a couple of years ago. It was also Sept. I organized a tour for 6 of us and booked it w/ Jon Frosti of Solstice Tours (2nd website below).

We had a fantastic day and did the Golden Circle Tour. We saw so much w/ Jon as he was able to navigate around the tour busses and take us to other spots if there were tour busses there. He is very knowledgeable and was a terrific tour guide. He can tailor an itinerary for you for your 7 days and give you hotel recommendations. I had a friend that visited Reykavik last year and Jon coordinated everything for her. She also was there about a week. She loved her time spent w/ Jon. Do check him out.

If you want to do your own planning it is easy to get around and there is much information about rental cars, things to see, etc.

Here are 2 tour guide companies you can check out.

Hi elyssek,

the first thing to accept is that in 7 days you aren't going to be able to see the whole of Iceland, so you need to decide whether you're going to base yourselves in Reykjavik for a while and do day trips, or to be more adventurous and try to see more of the country.

the other thing to remember is that by September many of the glaciers will have melted substantially so dog-sledging and other such activities may not be possible.

for an idea of itineraries, can I suggest looking at Discover the World's website? I'm not suggesting that you go with one of their tours, but they have a lot of good ideas about how to use your time, which you may find helpful. As for accommodation, the best place we found was here: http://www.farmholidays.is/

they don't just offer farm accommodation - you can book hotels, hostels, camp sites and well as farm and guest houses. THey also have self-drive itineraries which again you might like to look at.

In a week you would have time to go down to the south perhaps as far as Vik, then back up to the golden circle of Geyser, Gulfoss and Pingvelir, and across to the Snaefellnesses peninsular. The farmholidays website suggests that you could do a circuit of Iceland in that time too, but it would be a lot of driving!

I don't like to refer people to my trip reports but if you click on my name you will see a report on a short hiking trip we recently took in Iceland. Unbelievable scenery. Your dates might be a bit late but it is worth looking into.

I echo the sentiments expressed by annhig. 7 days does not give you enough time to see everything Iceland has to offer, but certainly enough to explore in detail certain areas.

Another option would be to carry on past Vik and check out Skaftafell national park (the southern side of it) and the surrounding area, but that would probably mean sacrificing a visit to Snæfelsness.

If you do take the southern route then maybe consider a trip to the Westman Islands? Stunningly beautiful and well worth a visit.

Be aware that there may well be snow in Northern Iceland in September, however the south should be relatively "snow-free"

interesting to get to, too - we boarded the smallest plane I'd ever been in, and came back on a smaller one. it was the weekend of some Icelandic festival so our plane was weighed down by more beer per person than I've ever seen in my life - those icelanders know how to party!
