6 nights to spend between salzburg and austria

i will be in austria in mid may with 6 nights to spend between salzburg and innsbruck. i was planning 3 in each city but am now thinking i may need more time in salzburg. any suggestions ? we just want to do some sight seeing and some r & r. i think by the time we get to salzburg from vienna, we will have seen enough castles and palaces so don;t want to spend too much time touring them

Three days in each city would be two days too much for me and many but to use them as a base from which to hop to a plethora of awesome places is sweet!

And how are you traveling - train or car?

The fastest rail route Innsbruck-Salzbrg or v.v. goes via the so-called Corridor Zug thru Germany - Austrian trains that travel over largely German rails. But the inland Innsbrcuk to Salzburg rail route which takes a few hours longer is so so much more scenic - and you may even want to stop off for a night or so in the likes of Zell-am-See, lovingly set on a placid lake or famous Kitzbuhel, etc.

Anyway for lots of great info on Austrian trains and the more scenic Innsbruck-Salzburg route check out these IMO superb sites: www.ricksteves.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.seat61.com.

I haven't been to Innsbruck , but one could easily spend 3 days in Salzburg, doing day trips to the Lake District or Berchtesgaden in Germany.
I actually stayed for 5 days in Salzburg and did many day trips in the area , you can have a look at my trip report: http://ashwinbahulkar.wordpress.com/...ia-and-prague/

You might consider spending 2-3 days in the Salzkammergut. It's an easy 45-minute bus ride from Salzburg to St. Gilgen, a picturesque village on the Wolfgangsee. The Shernthaner B and B is a wonderful place to stay.

From St. Gilgen one can do a day trip by train to Hallstatt or boat trip around the Wolfgangsee to St. Wolfgang and ride the Schafbergbahn for panoramic views of the mountains and lakes.

Good luck as you plan.

For some r and r, maybe spend a day traveling by ship to the towns on the Wolfgangsee. The Konigsee by Berchtesgaden is also a nice trip. In Innsbruck, if it's clear, try the Nordkettenbahn for spectacular views.

Ah the Austrian Lake District - too cute to be true! The Sound of Music country where much of the film was filmed.

I love Salzburg and the areas around there. I am not high on Innsbruck. I would spend more time in Salzburg. You can easily day trip from Salzburg to Bertschesgaden, Hallstat or even Munich.

The fabulous Lake District is also an easy day trip from Salzburg by bus - St Wolfgang is a picture-post card city on a sweet lake.
