Sure. Downtown Frankfurt is not a terribly long trip on the subway (20 - 30 minutes). Take the Ubahn to the Dom/Romer station and see the old city and grab a coffee or lunch.
If you arrive on time, you could easily have three hours plus, to go downtown Frankfurt for lunch. Well worth it! As a matter of fact, if I have to have connecting flights with a few hours layover, I try to do it through Frankfurt because it is so easy to get downtown. Consider it a bonus.
Frankfurt airport to Frankfurt main station is 11 min. on the S-bahn. If you go 2 stops more to the Hauptwache, it is 15 min. The Römer is a 5 min. walk from the Hauptwache. You can catch your train back to the airport from the Hauptwache too.
Buy a Frankfurt City card at the airport info stand for 18 euro. It covers up to 5 people into Frankfurt and back to the airport, your transport in the city itself and 50 % off of museum admissions. A regular group card just for transport all day is 14.30 €. Plus, then you don't have to mess around with the ticket machines.
oh thank you so much! that will make my layover so much nicer. i have been through Frankfurt a few times, but never left the airport. I'm glad we'll have time to this time. i really appreciate this detailed info!
