5 or 6 Days in Germany - Frankfurt, Karlsruhe, Munich

Hello travel experts I need some advice and suggestions for the first part of a trip to Europe. Myself and my SO are aiming to start in Frankfurt Germany. Take one day for Jet lag, and another to explore the city, then a day trip to Karlsruhe, back to Frankfurt and then moving on to Munich to stay for two more days.
I am just beginning to create an itinerary and am wondering if these three cities are a good combination to see. Suggestions for major things to see in each of these cities are welcome, as well as other places that might be close for day trips when staying in Frankfurt or Munich.
We plan on staying in Germany for a total of 5 - 6 days, then we will be moving on to Zurich Switzerland.

Thanks in advance!

Frankfurt is not exactly a tourist hot spot - and while every city has something to do there are dozens of other places in Germany I would go first. Have never been to Karlsruhe - so don't know what's there.

If you want to visit Munich that's great and you should spend time in the Baravian hills (castles) and Alps and small charming towns south of there. I would do that in a heartbeat versus Frankfurt.

Karlsruhe is an unconventional choice. Why there?

Your plan takes you to places that needed to be heavily rebuilt after the war; any interest old-world places? Germany has a large number of them.

What about Cologne, is that a definite must see or is seeing the small charming towns around Germany a better way to go instead?

If we were to stay in Munich for potentially 5 days what would be the good smaller places to visit in the area. Instead of starting in Frankfurt since its not as much of a tourist spot.

I think that with 5 days, this idea of going "around Germany" or even as far as Munich will take too much of your sightseeing time.

You should probably look at an itinerary that keeps you roughly between Frankfurt and Basel, Switzerland - stay fairly close to the Rhine River, in other words.

On Day one, it makes sense after a long flight, as you suggest, to "Take one day for Jet lag, and another to explore the city..." I suggest that instead of taking the train into Frankfurt, you head in the opposite direction about 25 minutes to Mainz, a smaller, somewhat more charming city with a small but nice old town and a nice pedestrians-only zone.

On Day 2 you would be ideally poised for a trip to the scenic Rhine Valley and old-world towns like Bacharach, Oberwesel, St. Goar and Boppard. Some like to cruise this part of the Rhine. A full day there, then the night back in Mainz.

On Day 3, you'll be ready to head south - possibly to Karlsruhe, or maybe to Heidelberg, Gengenbach and the Black Forest villages, Stuttgart, Tübingen, Freiburg, or possibly Strasbourg FR??? With just 3 or 4 days you will have your hands full of things to see and do on your way to Switzerland.

Russ has some great ideas for you. I'd skip Frankfurt, and I love Strasbourg.
