My husband and I will be staying with friends in apt. they rented in April for 4 -5 nights in Barcelona. We would like to take a trip for another 4 -5 nights, perhaps Lisbon, or the South of France. We would considering driving, or flying to second destination. We are looking for suggestions. We are totally open to your ideas.
5 nights in Barcelona, where to go from there for additional 5 nights?

Have you already booked your flights or do you still have the option of flying open jaw? What are your interests? I can think of at least a half dozen possibilities......
Spain:Costa Brava, Madrid, San Sebastián,
Lisbon
France: Collioure, Arles, Avignon, St. Remy
We haven't booked our flights yet, so our options are completely open. We love art and history, beaches and exploring beautiful towns and countryside. We are open to flying, driving or taking the train if possible.
You can take the train to Perpignan, just into France and pick up a car there. (Or you can go further by train before getting a car.) Then you could stay anywhere in southern France.
One issue might be the return flight; going from Marseilles or Lyon could be inconvenient and costly. You could go back to Barcelona, but it's a long trip, so you'd lose most of a day in transit.
An option might be the TGV to Paris CDG airport, which takes a little over three hours.
Well, you could take the 4-5 nights and head to Madrid,Lisbon or Paris. Or rent a car and explore Catalunya further - Tarragona, Girona, the Costa Brava.
All of this works - it just depends on what you enjoy. Everyone has different tastes. Just make sure to lock down the itinerary before booking the airfare. If you decide on Barcelona and another area you don't want to have to backtrack to Barcelona for the return flight.
We really loved Palma, Mallorca (Around $85/rt from Barcelona). If you go that route, I also recommend HomeAway.com for apartment rentals.
While in Barcelona, take the train to Monserrat. Gorgeous place- I wish we'd stayed the nite there so we'd had more time to hike. Ballooning Barcelona is also amazing. Have a great trip!
