5 days in Paris - where to stay!

Hi there,

Myself and my boyfriend are going to Paris in mid november for 4nights and 5days. We were there 3 years ago for 3 nights and stayed in a small 3* hotel in Montparnasse which was nice but v.basic and to be honest was not worth the 200euros a night.

This time round we want to spend slightly more on a hotel and for it to be bordering on luxury. Searching for hotels online is overwhelming and as i do not know Paris very well (the first trip was rather disorganised and we spent the majority of the time wandering not knowing where we should be going) i am struggling to recognise a good deal(good rate, location etc). It would be great if someone could recommened a hotel which preferably would be 4* and in a great location. We are hoping to pay between 150-250 a night. While i am willing to stay somewhere quite quirky my boyfriend is all about luxury so we are finding it hard to comprismise on something. Also we are willing to move on the price if it is worth it! Thanks!

I just returned from a month's stay in a www.parisperfect.com apt. Some friends stayed here:
www.duquesneeiffel-paris-hotel.com/en_hotel1.htm

They had great rooms..ask for room 55 or 56. They said the ones ending in 5 or 6 are the ones you want. They had views of ET, Invalides and Sacre Couer.

Good luck...enjoy.....

I don't know luxury, but you can see a LOT of photos per hotel on the Parisby.com website. Then you can perhaps make a short list and recheck it here and at Tripadvisor. You can book either thru Parisby.com or find the hotel's website (my preference)...

I recommend this hotel regularly on this forum. A poster recently stayed there through my recommendation and wrote back thanking me. I've sent friends there and no one has not liked it. I always recommend to get a room on a high floor and facing the street. The hotel is on a residential square and in the heart of the 6th. I've been staying in that neighborhood, almost annually, since the early 80s, and it's in a lively area and easy to walk to the 5th and 7th. Happy Travels!

Hotel Cambon is just off Place Concorde and a few blocks from Place Vendome; a great location, and you will have to pay for it. My wife prefers the 7th these days so we stay at the Walt; also a **** with views of the ET from the higher floors. Both hotels are walking distance to many fine and affordable restaurants.

An apartment is so much nicer for you. For the same money you can get a super apartment through rentalfrance.com, one of them has an unbelievable view of the Eiffel Tower. Hotels are so yesterday! Go with your own romantic apartment!

Suzybel - My friends and I have stayed in rooms 42/43? maybe 45 & 46, at the Hotel Duquesne (Well, the corner room & the one next door facing the Tour Eiffel!) and had a lovely view of that sparkling lady.
Thanks to Joan, I now know what I suspected, the next 2 floors are even better. However, I have heard the receptionist trying desperately to extracte herself from disatisfied customers who did not get "The View"! Nothing is guaranteed she said!

As much as I adore the 7th and being near the Eiffel Tower, after 10+ visits I now am really happy to be in a comfortable hotel that is giving huge value for money.

This last trip we spent three nights in the Hotel Ibis, La Defense for 49 euros a double-en-suite. Please, can you get a better deal? Next to the metro & a few minutes from Charles de Gaule Etoile ( Arc de Triomphe) on the Champs Elysees! Obviously Fri-to Mon only.

Hi Tod,

It was the 3 gals last week who had the 55 and 56 rooms. They had made the reservations 18 mos. in advance. They were told no guaranty for those rooms...but because of constant nagging (I think) they were given those two rooms!

I must second GraceJoan's suggestion. Two years ago my daughter & I stayed at the Duquesne Eiffel in Rooms 55 & 56, after having researched their rooms/room numbers to death. It was well worth the effort. I, too, was told that those particular rooms could not be guaranteed, but I took the liberty of calling the hotel a few times prior to our arrival to *kindly* ask if they could possibly block those rooms for us. The rooms were perfection, as was the hotel. I can't recommend it highly enough.

The gals said that 55 was larger and the corner room, but both had great views...there were new carpets, spreads etc..very clean. There are 5 floors.

Right again, though 55 is actually just a tiny bit larger than 56. The real plus to 55 is that it's a corner room with 2 sets of French doors on opposing walls. They both open up onto a balcony that wraps around the corner of the building. So you can walk out one door onto the balcony, walk around the outside corner of the hotel & return to your room via the other balcony doors.

Room 56 also has 2 sets of French doors that go out to a balcony, though they're both on the same wall. However, the bonus of room 56 is that you see the Tour (virtually in its entirety!) while lying down on the bed. That is nothing to sneeze at, my friend. So I enjoyed the larger room w/wrap-around balcony, while my daughter went to sleep every night watching the Tour flickering away - the nightlight that dreams are made of!

I'm not sure that we ought to limit Suzybel to just a few hotels, as her trip is just a month from now. These particular rooms could easily be booked by now.

Suzy: you may be able to get something approaching luxury (although I'm a little confused on that) for 250. I think the really nice four star hotels in Paris go for above that. For instance, I have had people stay at the K&K Cayre, and it is over 300.

Is the Clement "approaching luxury">

I have that on my own list, and I'm more of a budget hotel person. But surely there must be something in the 250 range that is really nice.

I'm posting to keep this near the top, and just kind of wondering about the places that have been mentioned.

Hi!

Thanks for all the responses! I have to say i have looked at all the hotels with my boyfriend and we have decided that the Walt would suit us, it has that small boutique feel but appears to have the luxury we are looking for.

We have also decided that as we are there for 4 days we are going to stay in 2 different hotels. Perhaps something extra special for the last 2, Plaza Athenee, Crillon??(wishful thinking!)

I sufficiently spend my thursday in work browsing through hotels now it is time to spend another working day browsing eateries... if anyone would like to recommened anything i would be very grateful!

Thanks again!

Suzybel,

I am part of the 3 gals who just returned from Paris on Monday and stayed at the Duquesne (loved it!). On our last trip, we stayed at the K&K Cayre which was nice as well (some rooms there have views of the Eiffel Tower as well). Having stayed in both, I prefer the Duquesne. I included a link which shows pictures taken from our balcony.

Enjoy planning your trip!

Check out hotel esmeralda,a quiet hotel (previously a small monastry,I think)over looking Notre Dame, close to the latin quarter, great resturaunts around the corner. Some of the rooms,no.11 i think ,looks directly toward Notre dame and also onto a pretty church park with birds chirping, lots of leafy trees. It's around the corner for the a traditional patisserie and the charismatic Shakespere book company...open late into the night full of excentric travellers encouraged to stay and read on one of the chaise longues or add to the walls with post cards and nuggets of wisdom.Fabulous and the best news of all only 95 euro per night for this room. Not 4 star and no breakfast but full of charm.

Another idea is Abbatial St. Germain--not truly luxury, but very nice and a great location.

FYI the Esmeralda Hotel is a 1* basic hotel, it would be completely inappropriate for your desires (and I believe even for a 1*, it is often described as dirty). The Abbatial is only a 3*, so definitely better than the Esmeralda, but not remotely luxury.

I really do not understand these suggetions for someone thinking of the Crillon.

Christina,

If you'll take another look at her message, she stated that the Crillon was "wishful thinking." And I clearly stated that the Abbatial was not "truly luxury."
