We have five days between Amsterdam and Neuchatel, Switzerland-in Germany? OK you savvy Fodor travelers, I am open for suggestions! Dates: Aug 6-Sept.10. The Plan, so far:
2 weeks at an apartment in AMS—already rented. Will be using trains for several daytrips (or maybe a car for a couple of days).
5 days to spend somewhere else—where???
2 weeks in Neuchatel at an apartment in the town. May use trains again for daytrips, but possibly rent a car for 2 or 3 days.
Our thoughts on the five days so far are that we will want to be out in the coutryside in a small town, not a city. 1) Train to somewhere in Germany we have not been, e.g. Rothenburg (staying nearby, not in), again taking day trips to towns on the Romantic Road via train—or we may rent car. Any other areas of beauty we should look into? 2) Train to a different area of Switzerland from Neuchatel, where there are higher mountains (we live in flat Florida now).

We have traveled in Bavaria and loved it but would like to experience some other area of Germany perhaps. Have spent time in the Alsace (I know, it’s France!) and in the Interlaken and Montreux areas of Switzerland. As for our travel style, we like wandering in lovely, old places, observing local life, plenty of cafes for people watching, minimum of museum-going although we love history, not into cathedrals particularly. Like to try to absorb into the place we are in and try to experience what it is like to live there.

Need some comments, suggestions, etc. to help us make a goof decision!
