4 month Studio Rental in Paris?

Hi everyone,

A friend of mine needs to do research in Paris from Feb-June 2008 and is looking for an inexpensive studio for around $1700 USD/month.

The usual vacation rentals sites clearly can make a lot more money doing weekly rentals so don't welcome these longer term rentals but I'd also think it might be convenient for a private owner to not have to deal with the hassle of constant turnover and inevitable vacancies. He'd also be able to pay the 4 month rent in one lump sum.

Is is not realistic to find a studio for him in the Marais at that price? Any leads or directions? He's a professor so I was wondering if there's some way for him to communicate with French researchers who might want to be in the States for several months if they're on sabbatical, etc.

thanks for any help.

Try www.sabbaticalhomes.com.

And several vacation rental agencies also have long-term availabilities, e.g.:

If he's a professor and you are not an academic, he should be the one to try to handle some contacts with other colleagues or other universities, not you. That's from personal experience, as I was not one, but did work in a think tank/grad school that was similar, and I let out my apt. to a visiting professor and saw notices from others wanting to swap or temporary arrangements. I lived in a place where there were a lot of French expats, though, so notices from French people weren't unheard of.

I belong to my local Alliance Francaise and there are notices like that on the boards there, if they exist. So you should contact your local Alliance Francaise to ask if anyone has asked for that.

Does this person speak French? If so, he should be looking at French rental and sublet websites himself to arrange such a thing. There are some that are run by French agencies or have French personal rentals and are not the type of vacation rentals you see talked about a lot on here. www.pap.fr, for example.

www.lodgis.com is French but has other language pages and has prices in that range.

He should also look for ads in papers that cater to expats, such as the newsletter/magazine FUSAC which published in San Francisco and has lots of ads for sublets or apts. It's distributed in Paris, also. http://www.fusac.fr/

Thanks for these great leads. He's in Minneapolis so its not exactly an ideal destination for a Parisian academic unless they're doing American Studies.

What exactly is Alliance Francaise -- will there be a fee for him to join?

thanks again.

O.K. -- this is insanely expensive and small and noisy, right?

Trying to get her down several hundred euros for a 5 month rental. I don't usually like dealing with this agency.

My friend is looking into the other links you provided, thanks.

If he has any interest in/links to Ireland - he could stay in the Centre Culturel Irlandais.
