4 days in lovely Switzerland - need help with itenary
I am planning to stop over in Switzerland in end of August for 4 days and would like to make the most of my time while I am there. My wife and I will be reaching Zurich on Aug 28 and plan to rent a car (I like trains but we will have lot of luggage since we are on another international trip). I have been to Berner Oberland couple of years ago for a very stop and would certianly want to go back there.
I am requesting the group for an input on what else to see?? Specially since I will be mobile and can do quick stop wherever necessary.. any input including driving tips, hotels etc will be greatly appreciated as well.

Personally, I loved driving in Switzerland...even though the trains are legendary for their effciency and reliability.
I'd say you should stay in Grindelwald, as a car would be useless to you in Wengen or Murren. You may also wish to stop and explore Lucerne on your way there from Zurich. It's quite beautiful.
Good luck, and enjoy your trip.

The Berner Oberland area is a good choice.
Those who do not like walking and hiking can certainly find other entertainment options in the Berner Oberland area.
In 4 days you could certainly sample Wengen, , Muerren, Grindlewald or some of the other villages close by, Meirigen or perhaps even Kandersteg.
You could take the train over to Zermatt, but fair warning, if you plan to spend 3-4 days there, it would help to lace up some hiking boots or rent a mountain bike, otherwise, the non hiker might find it boring after a day or so.
The luggage thing might be a problem though.
Best bet, drive to Grindlewald, get a room there. You can park your car. Stop by the i office next to the train station in Grindlwald. Get maps and stuff and have fun!
One more thought. Lucern is closer ( 1 hour away)and is very tourist friendly in terms of finding activities to keep you all busy!

If you have just 4 days I would spend all of them in the Oberland. Some pictures from my recent trip there:

There are enough places to go in the Grindelwald area to occupy your time.
Because you will have a car, I suggest driving to the top of the Grimsel Pass.
It is an easy trip to Innertkirchen where you start the ascent of the pass.
In Grindelwald, I like the gondola trip to First and the godola trip to the crest of the Männlichen.
And then there is my favorite to the inner mountain world at Stieregg.
And if you want bigge, the Jungfraujoch.

Edward2005, nice work with the pics. I remember pulling some leg muscles just behind the right knee on a hike to Tanzboden. It took everything I could to get back home that night.
Your shots of Gimmelwald and Walter's are great!
On one trip, Walter was bussing tables just outside his hotel. We caught him in a cheerful mood and joking around with everyone.
I commented that I was getting way to old to huff and puff my way up and down those hills.
I think those pictures you submitted are GREAT and should be the deciding factor for the person who asked that question as to what village or region to stay in. A picture is worth a thousand words or whatever? That is true!

Thanks for the input. I will certainly add Lucrene to my trip. BTW, what is the best car rental option. I mean, should i book a car from US (Avis??) or are there any other sites which offer better european car rental alternatives??

Checkout Europcar.
And get a price from AutoEurope as well.
Look at the "includes" before you decide.
And price out having a second driver!
Avis will sock it to you on that expense; at least they have me.

rk could park in Lauterbrunnen or Stechelburg and take the funicular or cable car up to Murren. The town is small enough to do entirely by foot. Besides, I'm not even sure it's possible to get a car to Murren.

As far as I know, the usual tourist cannot drive a private vehicle to either Mürren or Wengen. The same is true of Saas Fee and Zermatt. In the case of Saas Fee, there is a car park on the edge of the business district.
