Will cover both from Switzerland to Austria: Hiring a car would be better or public transport??
Is there any train pass that works both in Switzerland and Austria??

As I had mentioned in your other post for me the Wolfgangsee area is a must. The link below provides information on how to get there. I would double check and make sure the information is current.

Hallstatt is lovely and a must for me personally as well.

I was underwhelmed by Zell am see and thought it too commercial but the rain may have put a damper on things for us.

I think your plan to stay in the city and do day trips is a good one. There are reasonable train/bus connections to avoid having to rent a car in Salzburg.

Also don't think you have time to do everything on your list. You may want to drop one of those places after prioritizing based on what you want to accomplish. I personally would drop Innsbruck and Zell am and add Wolfgangsee.

Thank you for your inputs, I have added wolfgangsee and st gilgen in my list.the purpose of this trip is to explore a place as a couple as this is a kids free vacation...
Which gives us the chance to add some adventure by going for skydiving, para gliding etc...also appreciate if you can pls suggest some places to see...

try www.sbb.ch -Swiss Railways for discounted Zurich to Salzburg tickets or try from Wengen -if you have a Swiss Pass use it to Zurich or if can't get discounted ticket use it to the border and buy a supplemental ticket in Switzerland for the Austrain train portion.

For lots on trains check www.seat61.com - boffo info on discounted tickets; www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com.

There is a Switzerland-Austria Railpass but it is considered to be a Eurailpass and thus offers much more limited benefits than some kind of pass just for Switzerland or the region there you are traveling in.

Definite no to Swiss-Austria Railpass.

Salzburg to Munich is best by train - just over an hour by high-speed train or slightly slower regional trains that you can use the Bavarian Card (buy it in Salzburg's German part train station) and up to several people can ride unlimited regional trains all day for about 30 euros total for all.

Note that even Salzburg is a few miles inside Austria it is part of the Bavarian Ticket scheme and you can buy the pass in Salzburg and use it to go to Munich and on S-Bahns, trams and buses in Munich that day or night.

No need to pre-order. But be sure you are taking regional trains not faster trains.

Also, be aware than three nights is never 4 days - it is two full days and a couple of extra hours on either side if you are lucky. Thinking of it that way, I think you may be trying to visit too many places. Less (destinations) is more (fun).

I don't think you have time for this in 4 days. I'd suggest that you narrow it down to 2 places at most... imo, skip Zell and Innsbruck. Salzburg, Hallstatt, Wolfgangsee are within an hour or so of each other, so you might be able to squeeze in a lot there... you'll have to decide on your priorities.

Have to agree with many of the posters above. I understand that you want to "explore" and that this is a "kids-free" holiday, but with your itinerary the only exploration you will really be doing is of train schedules and travel logistics.

If you want to check the boxes on your Austrian holiday, your itinerary is spot-on. You can dash from city to city; sway with the tourists; snap your photos; eat a lunch of the local cuisine; and move along. If you really truly want to explore, to "travel through and learn about," cut the Austria holiday destinations in half.

This is why I Love Fodors!!! Sometimes I have had terrible experience on here with rude people...but you all have been so, so helpful...

I have taken everything in! I am now worried about planning the "daily" itineraries and what we are going to do and see. I am now done with our hotels bookings as figured out now which cities we are staying in:

Here's how my itenarary looks like after all really useful comments by you guys:

Friday - arrive in the morning in Zurich.- train to reach our hotel in wengen (our base ):
Friday - day trip to Lucerne
Saturday - day trip to Interlaken
Sunday - day trip to-l Grindelwald
Monday - check out n take a noon train to Salzburg -- go around the city to nearby places that can be covered in half a day or evening time
Tuesday - Halstatt
Wednesday - Wolfgangsee
Thursday - check out - take a train to Munich
Friday - leave for home in the flight after 8pm

Is there a particular "neighborhood" or area that we should stay once we get to Munich as we have only 24 hours barely?

For Munich: check out the Marienplatz area... very central/walking distance to sights.

Sunday - day trip to-l Grindelwald>

Grindelwald itself is just a town -you want to go further up then that on a day trip. Nothing specific to see in Grindelwald except fab views. Take a cable car to the Mannlichen perhaps - higher up and rave views over the whole area - do the easy walk on wide paths to Kleine Scheidegg and train back down to Wengen and Lauterbrunnen for variety - see both Grindelwald amphitheatre and Lauterbrunnen Valley.

Or take train to Jungfraujoch - and awesome glaciers and views from the highest train station in Europe- but that train is very expensive - even with a Swiss Pass.
