3 wks. in July

Our first trip to Ireland this July. 5 of us will be staying in the home of a friend of a friend near Roscommon. Sister-in-law wants to do fam. genealogy in Donegal.Husband & I will be able to go alone. What kind of limits will we have as to distance if we are based at friend's home. How much of country can we see?

Barbara,

Will you have a car? Will you be walking, relying on trains, or working with buses?

Thanks, Sue. We'll be renting a car for the 3 wks but of course we could take the train. We've been reading "Ireland of the Welcomes" for yrs. & areintrigued by the articles on side trips.I've read that because of the narrow roads in Ireland, we won't cover as much distance in a given time as we do at home.

Barbara,
I highly reccommend you do the drive thing. If you're from the States you know that you average about a mile a minute -- what with pit stops and such. In Ireland you average about a kilometer a minute which is much slower, but you won't want to go much faster. I also read Ireland of the Welcomes and have even managed to drive some of the suggested Byways Rather Than Highways. Remember that Ireland is only about 150 miles wide and 300 miles long (North to South). You can, quite literally, get any where on the island in a day. I wouldn't travel any other way! Note: If you go to Dublin I would take the bus or train. Parking in the city is a nightmare any time and in summer... I cringe to think of it. You can get great bus tours through Dublin City Tours or Grand Dublin Tours if you get tired of walking. Bring comfy shoes! Have a great trip and feel free to email me for more info if you want. Ireland is my favorite subject!
