3 nights Santorini suggestions with a child- is akrotiri a good location?

Hi
We will be traveling to Santorini from The Netherlands this mid May. I guess we are slightly late with hotel bookings as most of the good properties in Fira and Oia seem booked.
Our budget is approx Eur150-180 per night and we are 2 adults , 1 kid.
I found Kalestesia suites in akrotiri, but confused about the location.
Is it a good idea to stay so far from Fira, Oia?
If we hire a car to self drive , then should we choose Akrotiri? How much does it cost to hire a car for an entire day in Santorini?
Any kid friendly resort suggestions in Fira?
Thankyou friends!

Are you certain all the hotels are booked up? Does it have to be a hotel? Have you checked AirBnB, there are still some properties available in May in your price range, cave houses and apartments. If I couldn't stay in Fira or Oia, I would look for accommodation in Kamari or Perissa but really the whole point of Santorini IMO is to stay somewhere close to the caldera.

Akrotiri is a quiet village away from all the crowded parts of the island, although the archaeological site there as well as the path to the Red Beach will be quite busy in May. A car is definitely needed for convenience and for exploring the rest of the island. Last May I paid €20/day for a car.

For an excellent and affordable child-friendly hotel with a good on-site restaurant in Oia check here: http://www.anemomilos.com/en

Thankyou odin and brotherleelove for the kind replies.
By most hotels booked i mean- most good ones in my budget seem to be booked.
I really loved the Kalestesia suites for its views, and overall as a property but just the distance makes me apprehensive.
Anemomilos- is a great hotel but higher than my budget.
Im looking at max Eur 180 per night forSantorini.

Any more suggestions?

Shauri, I don't know what you're looking at but on the Anemomilos Hotel website they offer an apartment for 3 in May for €125/night.

Shauri, are you emailing the hotels directly, or are you using a third-party booking site such as booking(dot)com? There are a number of reasons why the booking(dot) website will sometimes show "no availability" when the hotel still has room vacancies. One reason is that only a few of the rooms are allocated to the booking website, and the rest are rented directly by the hotel.

I can't imagine where Santorini would put all those extra people who come in August if the hotels were full in mid-May. Some select hotels may indeed be full, but surely not as many as you are experiencing.

I agree with Heimdall about booking.com and other third-party agencies.

What you can do is use a third-party like booking.com or Trip advisor and if you find something that fits your needs and budget go directly to the accommodation's website and inquire there. You'll probably get a better, better customer service and a lot more information on the area and island.

Thanks for all your valuable suggestions friends!
Yes, you are right about booking.com.i finally did write to the hotels and receive few positive responses.
However, now with few good options available right from Fira, perivolos, akrotiri to kamari n 1-2 in oia, i need to decide which location is better.
Do you all recommend Kamari? There are some pretty good reasonable options there!

Kamari and Perivolos are fine if you want to be at the beach instead of somewhere you can easily view the caldera. That's the main trade-off. There are plenty of shops, restaurants, cafes and galleries there.

Hi friends
Just have to finalise between these options for resorts-
Tamarix del mar suites in Kamari
Santo miramare in perivolos
Or
Notos thermes and spa in vlychada

If anyone has any past experienced with these hotels or any suggestions about the location do let me know which is a good one given that we are with a 3 year old child.
We are open to hiring a car for the day.

Santorini palace in Fira was also an option, but is little higher than my budget. Hence confused.
