3 nights in the 10th Paris

In June 2018, I'll have 3 nights in the 10th, staying at Soft Hotel. This is the start of a 3 week trip to Europe. After Paris, we'll spend a couple of nights in Reims and then meet up with friends for a week in Alsace. I've been to Paris several times and wanted to explore a different area of Paris & decided on the Soft Hotel. The reviews looked good for a budget hotel & it's a reasonable walking distance from Gare du Nord and Gare d'le Est, both of which we'll use.

We have a couple of restaurants closer to the Seine that we want to return to, but I'd love to get some recommendations for places to eat in the area that we're staying. I do have the Patisserie Liberte marked on my map. We are mainly interested in casual French food, for dinner looking to spend no more than 100 euros, with wine, for 2. For example, on our last trip we loved Juveniles wine bar and L'Orange on ile Saint Louis.

I've also never seen the Canal Saint-Martin & would like to explore it. The Square des Recoletts looks interesting with its bridges and locks. Is there another stretch of the canal that is worth exploring or is this a good area to get a feel for the canal?

I stayed at the Soft one night, my last before the Eurostar to London. I liked it very much and wouldn't hesitate staying again. The people there are lovely and kept my luggage for several days for me before my check-in date while I visited an out-of-town friend. A real bargain with no down side.

I had dinner at La Taverne de Zhao, a no-frills but very good and very popular (go early) Chinese place across the street and a few doors down toward the canal from the hotel, painted red. I'm a sucker for Chinese and this was not your usual menu, well reviewed and I concur.

MmePerdu,
Thank you for your confirmation about the hotel. It's very reassuring.

My husband's family is Chinese so I get plenty of good Chinese food when I'm with them.

Check the menu as you walk by. You might be tempted and it's a fun casual crowd, if something easy makes sense at the time.

Three of my favorites, not quite in the 10th but in the 11th and not far away; Clown Bar (rue Amelot), Bistrot Paul Bert and it's fishy sister next door L'Ecailler du Bistrot. All are very popular and you will want to make reservations.

The Canal Saint-Martin is actually pretty tacky compared to the part of the Canal north of Stalingrad . . .Bassin de La Villette leading to the Canal de L'Orque and the Parc La Villette. A place I like to sit in the sun is at the restaurant La Rotonde at Stalingrad. Also worth seeing in the area is the Hopital Saint-Louis built as a plague hospital at the same time and in the same style as Place des Vosges in the Marais.

You won't be short of eatery and cafe choices. There are some good food and drink peniches clinging to the canal banks

I love the area. However I don't often eat there.
I'd recommend Labranda a Turkish on Louis Blanc. Small and local.
Close to gate du Nord I recommend l'ardoise gourmande rue Belzunce. Excellent et the best profiteroles ever inParis. In front you have Casimir where we had a Fodors Gtg once. Very correct.
Mamagoto rue des petits hotels is nice too.

However you could go on rue du Lancry buy some Lebanese food and a bottle of wine at a wine shop and eat it along the canal. Lovely.

I loved Carabinieri on same rue Lancry. Assanabel close to Château d'Eau metro is a nice Lebanese too.

There are some good restaurants within a 15 minute walk of your hotel. Two of my favorites are Bistro Paradis on Rue Paradis between Rue de Hautville and Rue Faubourg-Poissoniere though fair warning, I heard recently that they closed for good), Le Comptoir Iode also on Rue Paradis but just past Rue Faubourg Saint-Denis. Also on Rue Paradis is Federation Francais de l'Appertif -- I am not kidding but this is a small bar/shop dedicated entirely to the art of aperitifs and products that are made in France. Also if you want to walk over to Rue Faubourg Poissonerie (15 minutes), you will find Mozza & Co (mozzarella bar), Le Richer (snacks, small plates, coffee and dinner) and Fonzarella (pizza). Going the other way from the hotel on the same street, you have Les Vinaigriers. Keep going down Rue Vinaigriers and almost directly across from Les Vinaigriers is a Patisserie Liberte. Also on that street is the Sunken Chip, which I have not yet tried but it looks interesting if you are thinking about getting fish and chips. If you want some good coffee, Ten Belles is just across the canal from were Rue Vinaigriers turns into another street. If you are interested, across the street from your hotel is a cute little bijoux jewelry shop called Desidero where the owner makes the jewelry.

Now I have a new problem as there seem to be so many interesting places to explore and restaurant to try. Very happy that we decided to try a new location & stay in the 10th. Thank you, everyone.

If you can stop in Chez Prune for an apéro or Sunday brunch, do so. Don't be put off by the grungy exterior. It's a favorite haunt of locals and celebrities alike, and the food is good and the prices great.

I went to Chez Prune last spring with a friend. It's v good. There is another one near the canal that is popular and was good, too I can't recall the name now.

Philou. A tiny place, reasonably priced for very good quality. Reservations strongly advised because of the size.
