Which town would you stay in - we are arriving from Florence and will backtrack to Rome for our flight home. We would like to do a day trip to Pompeii. Which town would you stay in to cut down on travelling - particularly with Pompeii?

or - would we be better served to do Pompeii on our way to Amalfi from Florence or on our way back to Rome?

Your itinerary is not very clear, but I assume that you will be staying in the Amalfi area for 3 nights and then driving back to Rome for flight home.

The closes town to Pompei in the Amalfi area that is worth staying in is Sorrento. From Sorrento you can visit Pompei, as well as Amalfi, and Positano, the 2 main towns on the Amalfi drive. We stayed in Sorrento as well as Praiano which is a small town halfway between Amalfi and Positano.

Since you will only be there 3 days, I believe Sorrento is your best bet.

Can you leave from Naples instead of Rome?

Thanks everyone - we had originally thought we'd stay in Sorrento - but Positano looks so nice. I think it is back to Sorrento!
