3 nights after Basel?
We are planning a mid-September vacation. Starts with 2 nights in Amsterdam, and then a 5 night Rhine River Cruise. We arrive in Basel at 7 pm, so have a night there. We fly out of Zurich 4 days later. We are overwhelmed at the choices. 30 years ago I went to Zermatt and loved it, so we were thinking of that. But then, I read a lot of the recent posts, and Montreaux seems popular. Can some of you seasoned travelers offer advice on our 3 nights in Switerland?

Hi Nancy,
we just came back from a trip to switzeland and italy. On our way back we discovered the buergenstock hotels above Lake Lucerne. A truly beautiful place, incredible views and impeccable service.
(http://www.buergenstock-hotels.ch/) If you have a rental car you can easily go to Lucerne (15 min) Interlaken (45min) or even St. Moritz (1,5h) for a daytrip!

How about Rapperswil on Lake Zurich? From there you can easily visit Lucerne for the day, or catch a lake boat and visit Lake Lucerne's pretty towns. We stayed in Rapperswil for 7 nights and loved it. Depending upon the time of your Flughafen flight, you might be able to stay there till the morning of your departure. Actually, on a more recent trip we stayed our last two nights in the small town of Bulach, just north of the flughafen. There's a nice hotel there (I think it's the Golden Kopf or something like that; Ursula can probably correct my spelling), good train connections into Zurich, and a convenient bus to the airport.

Nancy: If you are an art lover, you should add another night in Basel which would allow you to visit some museums in my birthtown such as the Kunstmuseum, the Fondation Beyeler, the Tinguely Museum.
www.baseltourismus.ch for detailled information.
My favourite museum right now is the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen (some 15 minutes with tram Nr. 6 from the very city center of Basel).
I would then either choose Lucerne or Berne as another base and make daytrips from there. Zermatt will be an awful long trip. I would rather head to the Berner Oberland which can be done easily in just one day.
Last night, stay downtown Zurich. Train to the airport from the main station is very easy and very short.
Info about getting to the airport at
www.uniqueairport.ch

You could rent a car in Basel, visit the spectacular Rheinfall in Schaffhausse and then stay overnight in Luzern. The second day you could get to one of the picturesque towns in Berner Berland as Grindelwald. Stay there a couple of days and visit Jungfrau/Schilthorn/Trummelbach waterfalls/Glestscherslucht, all them strongly recommended. Then back to Zurich to fly out.
