3 Days in Western Highlands: Itinerary Review
Hi Friends,
I hope am not testing your patience too much but here is my last missing piece of itinerary.
Quick Context: We are a couple in early 30s going to Scotland in mid September and will be spending a few days in Highlands and Skye region. The itinerary below is for the Westen Highlands leg of my trip where we plan to spend 3 days.
We have 3 days in Western Highlands & I have decided to divide into (i) Trossachs, (ii) Glencoe and (iii) Ardnamurchan areas.
My tentative itinerary is as follows:
Day 1: Sep 10: Trossachs Day
Today we will rent car from Edinburgh and drive to Trossachs. I am told that it’s advisable to take a cab to Airport and hire the car there to avoid city traffic and may follow that advice.
We will drive from Edinburgh Airport directly to Kinlochard and do the ‘Kinlochard Bay Walk’ which is supposedly about 3.5-4 hr walk. Will either stop at Aberfoyle for lunch or carry a picnic lunch. After the walk, will drive to Callander through duke pass and may be photo stops at Loch Archary, Big O’Turk and Loch Venachar etc. and then head to Glencoe for overnight stay.
I shortlisted Kinlochard Bay Walk as my key walk on this day as its considered absolutely the best in Autumn. It’s a bit out of the way and am now wondering if we are a bit early for autumn colours & to enjoy this walk. In that case, please feel free to suggest any alternative walk. Here’s the link to the Kinlochard walk: http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/lochl...nlochard.shtml
We would have seen Edinburgh Castle on previous evening itself so am going to give Stirling Castle a miss. I know it’s a pity but it was difficult to include everything in a day.
Day 2: Sep 11: Glencoe Day
Today, in the morning we would do the Glen Lochan Trail (~1.5hr) and then take a driving detour to Glen Etive to take the views. Will come back then to Glencoe to check-out and have lunch. Post-lunch we plan to walk the Pap of Glencoe Trail (not sure if we will go all the way up) which is likely to take rest of the day before heading out to Fort William for overnight stay.
Day 3: Sep 12: Ardnamurchan Day
On our final day in the region, we will take Corran ferry to Ardamnurchan peninsula and then drive upto Ardnamurchan Point (guess about 3 hr. incl. ferry waiting time). Heard there is a café here, hope to have lunch there. Then will like to do spend time at Sanna Beach, probabloy best way is to do walk there from Portuairk (http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/fortwilliam/sanna.shtml)
Will then drive back through Road to Isles to Fort William with possibly a short stop at Glenfinnan.
I have read that this is a scenic circular driving tour but is it worth the 2.5hr of driving each way i.e. about 5 hour of driving in the day ? Or are we better off staying near Fort William and do walk there or in Glen Nevis and/or take gondola at nevisrange.
Next morning we drive down to Elgol via Skye bridge for our 3 day Skye leg of trip for which my itinerary is present in separate post “3 Days in Skye: Itinerary Review”
Look forward to your continued advice. You have been fantastic in helping me out with advice on Skye and Glen Affric. May be after this I will able to tie in all the pieces and complete my itinerary for the trip.

Thanks janisj. May be I will stay at glencoe itself then. I am also considering staying an extra day at Edinburgh now and will have to then skip my day 3 plan and will instead drive then to Skye via road of isles. May be an early start to ensure I catch 10:50 am vehicle ferry from Mallaig. What do u think ?

Janisj will be better at answering your question than me, but I would certainly opt for Glencoe.
I did want to mention the Airlink bus in Edinburgh. It runs from the airport to Waverley Station and would be considerably cheaper than a taxi. Whether it's a option or not really depends on where you are staying. Do have a look at the Edinburgh Airport website and the route Airlink takes to see if it'll work for you.

Thanks historytraveler for your tip on Airlink bus. Will definitely consider that. Am yet to finalize my accomodation (tend to do it last) so will try and pick a central location that could also help me in ease of travel to Airport.
