3 days in February in Zurich - what to do?

3 days in February in Zurich - what to do?
Occasionally, I like to do something 'stupid' and just take a cheap flight and disregard how long I can stay at the destination. I can get a decent flight to Zurich and would be on the ground for 3 days. I have been reading the posts here on things to do, but am wondering what is best to do during the month of February. Should we try to get out to Luzern, or is Zurich a fine destination? Generally, I dont need to see all the sites and keep a leisurely schedule. I like to hang out in the local culture if possible, eat some local food, and save siteseeing for whats truly local or a natural site (I'd sit and stare at the Alps for the day if thats an option). I am also open to hearing that this might be a bad time to visit, I havent bought my tickets but hope to soon. Thanks for your advice!

Yes, go ahead and buy the tickets!
Either Luzern or Zürich would be a good choice for your three days. But they are less than an hour apart by direct train, so you can easily choose one to stay in and see the other on at least one day.
Zürich is good for Swiss dining, hanging out, art, culture, and shopping. You can take a nice trip to the town of Rapperswil farther down the lake to see a castle on a hill and to see the little cafe-lined harbor.

Luzern is the place to just sit and stare at the Alps. Though it is a city with great dining and shopping, it is also a good site for nature sightseeing because it sits at the base of the mountains and at the foot of the lake. It's an incredible combination that makes for stunning scenery. Luzern also has a very nice old town with medieval buildings, fountains, bridges, and squares, and it has medieval walls around it.

Thanks for all the tips! What should I expect to pay for hotels? I am quite comfortable being the "old" lady in backpacker type hotels - I usually just upgrade to their best. 
I prefer to not spend a lot on lodging that I dont expect to spend much time in.

Unfortunately, I can't help much there. I've been using 3/4 star hotels, and in Zürich I've been staying in a suburb outside of the city.
But I've heard that the Pickwick in Zürich is inexpensive and good, as well as the Pension Joseph (not sure if I have the names right). You may want to do a text search here for "Zurich hotels" and "Luzern hotels" and also check at Trip Advisor.

If it were me, Luzern would be where I'd stay. I love the Altstadt and the scenery.
If you want a good price (~ 90 chf/nt single, no breakfast) on a Luzern hotel with a million dollar view of Mt. Pilatus and the lake/river, get a river-facing, upper room at the Mr. Pickwick. If you can afford a bit more (~158chf/nt breakfast included), go for a river view room at the Hotel Des Alpes http://www.desalpes-luzern.ch/index....TOKEN=19505287
