We are family of 10 (6 adults and 4 teenage boys) and are thinking of visiting Barcelona in early August we only have three days to visit and have never been there.

Any recommendations as to must-see sites, tours, and restaurants?

For a traditional Catalan meal, I recommend Set Portes (Seven doors) from 1836. An institution in town and tons of history in the walls. Have had several superb meals here the past few years, and you can expect some 40-50€/person. Last time we had a fabulous fish soup, monkfish/rape a la plancha and a divine Catalan speciality Arroz caldoso. Popular with tourists, but still a favourite with locals. The oldest restaurant in town, no fuss and family owned Can Culleretes from 1786, can also be an experience. Traditional Catalan food, old world atmosphere and great and very efficient, no small-talk adult women running the place. Reservations a must. http://www.culleretes.com/

For lunch, I will very much recommend typical L'Aribau close to the university from 1450. Here businesspeople, academics and all kind of locals drop in for a three course lunch with drinks incl for some 10-12€. Excellent place with lots of local specialities. Had a wonderful local sausage Botifarra with slightly garlicy white beans here last time in May for some 6€.

La Perla at the foot of wonderful Montjuic (with the castle, the many museums, the 1992 olympic arenas, the great parks) is as genuine you'll find a restaurant in Barcelona. I would stay in El Born (we did so as a family of five, 18+) because you can walk to so many interesting and fun sights. You also can catch the Metro line 4 at the Jaume 1 station, going to Passieg de Gracia in one direction and the beaches area (close as you can get, then walk a few blocks) in the other.

Depending on your interests, I would be sure to see Parc Guell, which is best reached by bus or taxi. Taller de Tapas in El Born can handle large parties, assuming you don't arrive at peak time. Sharing paella at the seafront in Barceloneta is fun, we like Cava Mar there. It's one stop on the Metro and then a 15-minute walk from El Born.
