En route back from a 3 week trip to Egypt, I'll be spending 3 days in Frankfurt early December. Going to pick up my Fodor's guide this weekend but would love any suggestions for "must sees" and "definitely avoid" things to do in town. Really love to do the "local" thing. Any suggestions for good day trips from Frankfurt? Any recs for tour companies in Frankfurt? I've checked Grayline's site but they only have tours listed for Munich and Salzburg. Many thanks!

The normal; destinations for one-day trips out of F. are the city of Mainz, the towns along the Rhine west of F., the city of Würzburg, the Neckar valley and Heidelberg, any of the little villages to the immediate North-west

Frankfurt itself has some attractions worth seeing. You can buy a Frankfurt tourist card at the airport which gets unlimited travel in the city limits on public transport and half off the city tours. The city tour is 3 or 4 hours and hits all the major districts, with the discount it's around 12 euros.
The zoo was great, but I don't know how attractive that will be to you in the winter.
My favorite day trip was to Schwäbisch Hall, its a little out of the way and requires renting a car, but was spectacular! if renting a car isn't an issue I have a few links that might be interesting.
Frankfurt has quite a nice fine art museum.

Also try the apple wine in Sachenhausen across the river from Frankfurt.
Les-suggest you type "Frankfurt" in the search box above, as there have been a number of recent threads discussing what to do and where to to go in FRA and the surrounding areas
How far are you willing to travel for a day trip? Some people don't mind going a few hours each way, others like to keep it closer.
Baden-Baden is only about an hour or so by train from Frankfurt and makes a nice day trip...a beautiful resort town (and looks lovely decorated for Christmas), excellent cafes and shopping. Spend a few hours soaking away all your cares in the Caracalla spa or try your hand at the casino.
Gosh, I don't remember the tour company, but I booked a 1/2 day tour from the main train station once and it was GREAT...We could easily have done a full day. It showed the historical highlights of Frankfurt and was very charming. The next time I passed thru Frankfurt, I shopped in the main town area and went to Sachsenhausen for apple wine and sausages. I also checked out the art museum mentioned, which was very nice.
