3-4 weeks Germany/Central Europe - options?

We are landing in Zurich on August 19, and have 10 days before a week-long stay near Munich, (Aug 29-Sept 5) then another 8 days (from the 5th - 14th) before leaving from Frankfurt. We are okay skipping Paris, but want to hit the Black Forest area, and go to the Normandy area for a couple days. We are planning on renting a car, but were thinking it's best to take the train from Zurich to Frankfurt and rent it there, so we can return to same location. Plane tickets (using mileage) are already purchased so a change there is not an option. I am looking for some itinerary ideas. Open to some other nearby countries as well. Thanks!
