26 hour layover in Amsterdam-where do we stay?

We have a 26 hour layover in Amsterdam and need ideas of places to stay and what to do. There will be 3 of us-18 year old male (graduation trip to Europe!) and parents. The 18 year has indicated that he is not interested in the Ann Frank house. I'm not sure what would be of interest in Amsterdam for a teenage boy-other than the usual couple of museums. I was thinking of a canal tour-but that isn't necessarily the most important thing. The males may want to rent bikes for a bike tour-but I'm not sure I am the most confident biker anymore. Any experiences with that?
Also, we need a place to stay. Our requirements are clean-but nothing fancy is needed. We have lived through a complete remodel/addition for the past 2 years so we have learned to live with very little and pure chaos! When I was researching B and Bs many of them had a 2 night stay required.
