2 weeks: Switzerland + Paris

Hi all,

After doing some reading up in this forum and research, I have come up with the draft itinerary for my Switzerland + Paris trip this June. As a background, me and my fiancée are about 30 years old,. We like nature, quaint villages, doing easy walks and hikes. We also enjoy good food and wine and a light touch of museums (nothing too heavy though)

Day 1 - 8 June Saturday
Arrive in Zurich morning, train to Luzern. Explore the town.

Day 2 to 3 - 9 June Sunday to 10 June Monday
Based in Luzern.
Depending on weather, either do Mount Pilatus Golden Round Trip on day 2 or day 3, with the other day being a day trip to Bern.

Days 4 to 8 - 11 June Tuesday to 15 June Saturday
Based in Wengen.
Hike around the Bernese Oberland region (one day for Lauterbrunnen valley, one day for Grindelwald area, one day Schynige Platte), one day visit Jungfrau (hike from Mannlichen to Kleine Sheidegg, then go up to the peak) and one day lake cruise on either Lake Thun or Lake Brienz. Weather will determine the order in which the hikes will be done.

Days 9 to 10 - 16 June Sunday to 17 June Monday
Based in Zermatt.
Gonergrat Railway on one day and go up to Klein Matterhorn on the other.

Days 11 to 12 - 18 June Tuesday to 19 June Wednesday
Based in Montreux.
Visit Chateau Chillon on day 11 after arrival from Zermatt.
Hike around the Lavaux vineyard area on day 12.

Days 13 to 18 - 20 June Thursday to 25 June Tuesday
Based in Paris
20 June: Evening visit Orsay Museum (open late)
21 June: Morning Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe / Champ Elysees; Afternoon explore Montmartre area; Evening visit Louvre (open late)
22 June: Morning / afternoon Versailles, evening Seine cruise
23 June: Morning Notre Dame, Sainte Chapelle, explore islands; Afternoon explore Left Bank, Luxembourg garden
24 June: Morning explore Marais; Afternoon explore Tuileries garden, Place Vendome, Opera
25 June: Revisit any places we like, shopping.

Whew, that was kinda long.. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Would appreciate your feedback on this itinerary! THANKS!!

Hi, I'm trying to construct a 4-6 day hiking itinerary for the Bernese Oberland region in July and saw with interest your proposal to spend a few days hiking there in June. What hikes are you considering in the Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald, S. Platte areas? I've been drawn to those areas but have read that they are mobbed with tourists in the summer. We love to hike but like more remote/less touristed trails. Are you thinking of using huts or hotels to do overnights while you hike, or just day hikes?

Hi cg_84,

Your itinerary looks ok to me. I personally would eliminate either Zermatt or Montreux and stay longer in the other. Also, I wonder on which day will you be travelling to Zermatt? It looks like you'll have just one full day and two half days. Remember that you'll need to have clear weather to see the Matterhorn, and you're not giving yourself a lot of time to allow for that.

For mamacat -- Grindelwald is mobbed in July and August. June isn't quite as bad. As I recall, you are going in July, is that right?

Have fun as you plan!

Hi mamacat,

Some of the trails I was looking at was

Lauterbrunnen Valley: The Lauterbrunnen - Grutschalp - Murren - Stechelberg - Lauterbrunnen loop
Grindelwald - First - Bachalpsee
S. Platte - Panorama walk

We are not serious hikers so we will just be doing day hikes and going back to our base hotel at the end of the day.

I used the above website to plan my hikes as it has a list of walks that can help you plan your hikes based on your interest. Maybe you can take a look and see which catches your fancy?

Hi Swandav,

Thanks for your suggestion! How about if we take one night from Wengen and add it to Zermatt? On the day we leave Wengen, we could leave our luggage at the Interlaken train station and do the lake cruise before heading to Zermatt in the evening? Checked and it looks like it's bright till about 9pm in June. This will then give us 2 full days and one half day in Zermatt which allows more time to get good weather to see the Matterhorn. Is this feasible?

I would not take a day from Wengen and add it to Zermatt.

Why don't you play it by ear and don't book in advance at all? Mid June is not very busy in Zermatt and Wengen, so you could easily make the decision if you go to Zermatt at the last minute, depending on the weather forecast.
