2 nights in Paris, where to stay?

Does anyone have a favorite Paris accommodation for a short stay in Paris? This August, my sister and I will be ending a month-long European tour with two nights in Paris. We've both been there before so don't feel the need to see everything in the city, but would love to end our trip on a high note with a lovely accommodation. We are on a budget...but would be willing to spend around 100 Euros a night. Maybe a fantastic hostel? A comfortable, friendly hotel? Or better yet, a bed and breakfast off the beaten path? Anywhere with character that would provide a great ending to a month in Europe.

You could try the hotel A near the Champs Elysees (www.paris-hotel-a.com) or Helzear Apartments on the Faubourg Saint Honoré (www.helzear.com). Otherwise, most of the nice comfy hotels inside Paris will be 200€+ per night so you may need to stay just outside Paris in La Défense or Levallois/Neuilly.

Don't stay in La Defense. You will miss much of the magic of Paris. Search on this forum for inexpensive Paris hotels. You may find something in the 5th.

The Hotel Jeanne d'Arc is an extremely popular choice in the Marais and should meet your budget.

The Hotel College de France in the Latin Quarter may also fit your budget and some rooms have balconies.

I presume lovely accommodations means just in relationship to a regular hostel, as that budget is very low for any big city, you know.

But the good news is you are going in August when many hotels discount their rates about 20 pct, so it is possible. It would be more possible if you were staying at least three nights, though. If I were you, I'd definitely get something with AC, I think you might be able to in August for 100 euro, although you won't have a big choice. Just find a good location that is in the Latin Qtr or somewhere convenient for fun.

B&Bs are a rural concept, you don't have them in Paris. Well, not much, there are some now if you find a website of them, but what's the point of that, I wouldn't think that would be as much fun or convenient as a regular hotel and I don't know what kind of regulations they adhere to. I imagine they wouldn't have AC, either.

I would know a lot of hotels possible more around 125 euro, but not 100 euro, even in August. At least not with AC.

okay, this place has a 20 pct discount in August and large rooms and is a great hotel with character and off the beaten path of most tourists, in the 9th. I've stayed there and really like it, it has AC. http://www.hotel-langlois.com/

but even it charges around 120 euro in August for a twin room (twins may cost more than a room with a double bed, also, so there is that problem). Most of the ones I know are more around that rate.

another place I've stayed in the Latin Qtr which is very nice with AC and has Aug discounts, but they want 119 euro per twin room in August for a 2-night stay
http://www.paris-hotel-trianon.com/

See, they would discount it 5 euro per night if you stayed 3 nights, a lot of hotels have that minimum for special rates.

Eurocheapo is a good site for nicer lower end places. One that comes to mind is the Hotel Esmeralda. It is right next to the river and next door to Shakespeare and Co (a famous English language bookstore). It books months in advance BTW. If you play your cards right you can get a room overlooking Notre Dame.

The other place we steer friends looking for a reasonable place in a fun part of the city is the Hotel Odessa at Montparnasse. Close to shopping and a 2 star place but it has a tiny elevator and their rooms are at 110 euros for August with 2 twin beds (95 for a single). A girlfriend & I paid a bit more for a room with 2 double beds and it was spacious with a great bathroom with a big soaking tub. I think that one was more like 130 euros. Also if it is August, you should ask for a room nearer the top floor to get better cross ventilation-I don't think that hotel has air conditioning.

Another hotel that is a the very western edge of the Marais (close to Beaubourg)and very near a terrific market street, Rue Montorgueil, is an older hotel that was recently renovated called the Hotel du Sejour Beaubourg:

http://www.hoteldusejour.com/index.html

36, rue Grenier Saint Lazare
75003 PARIS
Tél. 01 48 87 40 36

You can get their superior double (top of the line rooms) for 97 euros! Pay attention though because I think their lower end rooms may have shared baths-hostel style.

I agree that especially in August it is hard to find anything at 100 euros other than hostels, but these three hotels show that with a bit of digging you can find some reasonable places even in the "hot" parts of Paris where visitors typically like to stay.

If you want to be more adventurous in neighborhood, you might want to try Mama Shelter. They have a non-refundable rate of $111 US right now for August-only 79 euros for a room with twin beds. Here is a TA link:

http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Rev...de_France.html

If you don't know about Mama Shelter, it is redesigned by Philippe Starck, here is a review in the NY Times:

http://travel.nytimes.com/travel/gui...el-detail.html

Definitely a more "branche" neighborhood but looks like a fun place

Have a great trip!

I'd bid on Priceline.

Thank you everyone for your helpful info! I ended up making a reservation at Hotel Sorbonne in the Latin Quarter. I heard rave reviews, they have air conditioning, great location, prompt & friendly correspondence in response to my email inquiries, 92 Euros a night for a double. Looking forward to it.

Thanks again! This is a wonderful forum to be a part of.

That's a great deal. I stayed there many years ago, it's a super location. I imagine that's an August discounted rate, I think their regular rates are a lot higher.

Yes, it was an August discounted rate. Thanks, that was a great tip! I was actually expecting August to be MORE expensive than usual. Glad that's not the case.

why would AUgust be more expensive, it's the cheapest hotel rates of the year. That's true in almost any big city I know of, it's true in many cities in the US, also, like where I live (Wash DC). It's true in many European cities, it's because things are slow and there aren't as many people staying in hotels -- hardly any business travel, mainly.

And you won´t find too many Parisians in August in Paris, only tourists. The Parisians are on vacation, too, that´s why many restaurants and shops close down during August. And that also results in less tourists, so the hotel rates drop.
