2 nights in Paris, what should we see?

Hi, well we are going to be in Paris on the 12th and 13th of June during a Europe driving trip that we are taking. Can you please tell me what the best things to do in Paris are? We already know that we can't go to the Louvre, but what else is there? Also, is Le Defense (sp??) a good trip to make? Please help, and thankyou in advance for any info, it's very much appreciated. Thanks, ~Zack

Here is a short list to get you started:

Luxemburg Gardens
Rodin Garden
Pere Lachaise Cemetery
giant ferris wheel (near Madalline -sp- Church)
Sacre Coeur and Montmartre area
Notre Dame
boat ride on the Seine
if you like to cook E.Dehillerin and A.Simon (cooking shops)
check out Paris Walks for their list of Walking Tours (they are very good)

I'm sure many others will give you many other suggestions, you might also want to do a searcg of the forum ("Paris" - you'll get a ton of hits). It really depends on what you like and want to do.

I would highly recommend the Arc de Triomphe on the Champs Elysees. I felt a real thrill when I emerged from the Metro and saw the Arc for the first time! The Eiffel Tower is a must--be sure to go first thing in the morning so the lines aren't so long. We enjoyed just walking around the neighborhood we stayed in. It's a great way to get a feel for the city. Remember, you're only going to see a fraction of Paris, so don't try to do too much. Go for quality not quantity!

Hi! I spent 2 days in Paris also and here are the must-see sights:
take a walk down the Champs Elysee to the Arc De Triumphe, Take the elevator to the top of the Eiffell Tower, Notre Dame, Sacre Coure (the view from up there is great at night...you'll see why they call Paris the City of Love), get a map for the Pere La Cheise Cemetery and you can see where many famous people were buried, St. Chappelle is the most breathtaking church I have ever seen...I heard Jesus' Crown of Thorns was housed here for a while. If you get time to go to the Louvre even if it's just to see a few things it is very worth it. See the Mona Lisa and the Impressionists paintings. They are unbelieveable. Email me if I can be of any further help.

Amanda, isn't Paris known as the City of *Light*, not Love (not that it's not romantic, but I'm pretty sure that's what the nickname is)?

Also, just to clarify, the Impressionists are at the Musee D'Orsay, not at the Louvre with the Mona Lisa. The Musee D'Orsay is a great museum to visit on a short trip, since it's much smaller and more manageable than the Louvre. I'm not sure what day it's closed though (I assume you're referring to the Louvre being closed on Tuesdays when you say you know you can't go there?).

Hi, no we didn't say that we were not going to the Louvre because it's on Tuesday, we said we aren't going there because it's not on the top of our list. And we won't have time for it. We're not into the museums really. Also, she is right, Paris is called the City of Love, I think Vegas is the City of lights. Either that or NYC. Thanks all for your help, and any more info would be great, thanks, ~Zack

Sorry, Zack and Amanda, but Paris is indeed the City of Light--and when you see the monuments lit up at night, you'll see why. It's romantic, yes, but nevertheless the City of Light. For the best of both, I suggest a nighttime stroll along the Seine.

The Bateaux Mouches boat trips are best at night. La Defense is an interesting place, but only if you have weeks to spend in Paris. Also, it's a business district and totally dead at night and therefore not interesting and potentially risky.

Monday: Picasso Museum, Marais, Notre Dame, Deportation Memorial, bouquinistes
Tuesday: Musee d'Orsay, Eiffel Tower, Sacre Coeur, Bateaux Mouches

If the Eiffel Tower's lines are too long, you can get a bird's-eye view of Paris from the Montparnasse Tower.

If Picasso isn't your thing, then substitute les Invalides (Napoleon's tomb and army museum) and the 7th.

Definitely do a nightime dinner cruise on the Seine - -we did it last week - - did Bateaux Parisien dinner cruise - -expensive but worth it -- you leave when it's light and can see everything and then come back when things are lit --- so nice. Don't waste time in the line for the Eiffel -- take the metro to Sacre Couer and see the view there -- walk up the Champs to the Arc - - and go to Notre Dame and Saint Chapelle - -so close to each other and you can visit both briefly. It was so wonderful in Paris I would go back tomorrow if I could..............

My vote is for the Arc de Triumphe and Eiffel tower at night. The city of lights at it's best. Museums, parks for daytime.

My husband and I just went to Paris for the first time last month. I would have to agree to go see the city at night. We took a Cityrama tour(river and bus). It was a great way to see the entire city and a nice break for our feet and legs.
The lines at the Eiffel Tower can be LONG (you could be in one all day). Since you only have 2 days, I would go up L'Arc de Triomphe or Tour Montparnasse and enjoy the view from these high places. To me the Eiffel Tower was the sign that I was truly in Paris and some one posted here a while ago, if you are in the Eiffel Tower, you can't see it!
Have a great trip. I am truly jealous.
Vicki
