A friend and her husband are going to Iceland in Feb. Girls are 5 and 9. She has been told that they must get 2 rooms. Is this an Iceland thing? It seems unusual for kids that young.

They will need to book a family or quad room. They can't sleep 4 in a room for 2.

No they don't need to put the children in a separate room -- they just need to book the right sort of room.

It isn't an Iceland thing. It is normal throughout Europe. They need a family room, or failing that a pair of connecting rooms.

I am aware of that, but it seems like she was told family rooms weren't available.

Maybe a different hotel then? Or they will have to opt for connecting rooms.

1 kid and 1 parent in each room. Easy to do, even if not connected.

our kids were older when we went to Iceland so it wasn't an issue - we just got 2 rooms. we did have at least 2 places where we shared one large room - one summerhouse that had [at least] 7 beds all together in an attic, and a quad at the Blue Lagoon hotel the night before we flew home and i don't remember that being a problem.

plus I just went on TA, and putting in random dates, found loads of places offering rooms with 4 beds in Reykjavik.

A bit of research should find something suitable.

My guess is they were either told that by a hotel that does not have family rooms, or by friends who don't now what they are talking about . . .

Did it come across as cynical? I actually meant it - they either were inquiring at a hotel that only has doubles so yes, they would need two rooms. OR -- they were told by a friend or acquaintance who made some sort of (incorrect) blanket statement.

sorry JJ - perhaps cynical was the wrong phrase- but if a hotel has only double rooms, and knows that other hotels have family rooms, is it not sharp practice at least to tell an innocent traveller that only double rooms are available in Iceland? That's what I thought you meant.

Often hotels only have a couple of family rooms and that hotel might either no have them or they are booked. Just need to look for a hotel with family room - there are tons (although perhaps not for their date/price).

Hotel rooms in Iceland are small. Makes them easier to heat, I suppose. We had one cottage with two bunk beds (our children are grown), but with standard bedding, it's a no-go.

drlaz--Definitely not all hotel rooms are small. Ours was huge!!! We were there last month, so this was a recent experience.

Though most of our accommodation in Iceland was very good, we had one room [in a so-called summer house] that was frankly a dormitory with 7-8 very low beds/mattresses slung on the floor. There were beds a plenty, just not ones that any of us wanted to sleep in. What with that, the noise made by our early rising neighbours as they struck camp, and the desire of our host to carry out some Bible study with us on the pretext of inviting us for a cup of tea, we couldn't get out of there quickly enough.

I don't remember any family rooms, except at the Blue Lagoon hotel, where we shared a room with our kids, who complained bitterly about their father's snoring. But why should I have to be the only one who has to put up with it?

We recently returned from Iceland and stayed in one place out in the country that would be perfect for a family of four. It had a king (two twins pushed together) plus a set of bunk beds in an alcove. It was great. As others have said, I'm sure you can find many places with rooms that will accommodate four.
