1st Trip to Italy
Okay so I've never been out of the U.S.A. before and I want, no scratch that, need to go to Italy. I want to do all of the touristy thing, but as a cook I really want to explore the culinary side of Northern Italy I am going by myself and don't need any fancy accommadations (I'm thinking Hostels). I'd rather spend my money running around Italy stuffing myself and taking pictures. Does anyone have any ideas as to how early I should start planning? I was hoping to go in June, is there a better (less expensive) time to go? I don't have a lot of flexible time. Summer or fall is best for me. Any web sites that I should look at?

Sounds wonderful. I've been to Italy 2 times and am going back with my family in 2007..cant wait!
I recommend Sept, the weather is more trustworthy and its a bit less busy with tourists. I'd avoid August as thats when all of Europe is on vacation.

savah, although weather conditions have been rather "iffy in Northern Italy the past few years, I just had a conversations with friends in Veneto this week. They advised me to come in June for the best weather.
I have been in Northern Italy many times in September. Usually the first two weeks are beautiful but it is not uncommon to get rain and dramatic electrical storms around the middle of September an on. No freezing cold though. And good breaks from the storm, with more beautiful days.
And actually have had rain in June, but it is of short duration normally and more like a spring shower.
June is Northern Italy is generally not as hot as it is in central and of course south.
Either month should be fine as long as some rain and the electrical storms late part of September will not bother you.
IMO, either month will have the same cost.
Have fun planning your trip. You must be so excited!

The earlier in June the better for crowds, prices and weather...actually overlapping late May with early June even better.
You also might want to consider some cooking programs that are designed just for the cook who's on a tourist schedule. Some a little as a few days to a week or more. Tuscany is probably your best bet but there are some great ones in Marches, for example.
