19-day itinerary, AMS to BUD?

Jump to last reply

This is just for fun. We have a river cruise booked this mid-September. We are seriously thinking of cancelling it. But we have very good flights booked with miles, and I'm entertaining the notion that we could keep the flights and just plan an itinerary around this open-jaw.

We would arrive in Amsterdam on September 15th and fly out of Budapest on October 4th.

We are seniors, but are seasoned travellers and are comfortable with trains and/or renting cars. We do like train travel quite a lot. It would be nice to visit perhaps two cities in between Amsterdam and Budapest I think, possibly more if we were to rent a car for part of the journey.

We are familiar with Amsterdam and at the moment just have two days in a hotel booked, but would likely extend that by a couple of days at least. We have never been to Budapest, and have three nights booked there right now. I've read that train service from Vienna to Budapest is easy, so perhaps Vienna could be one of the cities--never been. Driving down the Rhine might be nice, since we were going to be cruising along it so perhaps a destination in there somewhere.

Or we could do Amsterdam - Berlin - Prague - Budapest, something like that.

This is very much at the what-if stage--we may just cancel the whole trip. But I thought it would be fun to blue-sky for a while, since we don't have to cancel the cruise until June. What say you all? Is this a good idea?
