18 DAYS IN VIENNA, 7 DAYS WITH A 4-YEAR-OLD
We have loved several short visits to Vienna in the past, so we decided on a longer visit starting 19 September.
I would love suggestions for things to do and see that we might not find in a guidebook.
The last week of our stay our daughter and grandson will join us, so activities that would interest a 4-year-old would also be appreciated. (Everyone in our group understands the German language).

Hi, we have had two two-week stints in an apartment in Vienna with our daughter (now 5, but then 2 and 4). Things she enjoyed were the butterfly house at the Hofburg; the Zoom Kindermuseum; cycling on the front of a rented bike through Vienna; the aquarium (Haus des Meeres) which is in a former flak tower (itself interesting), and swimming at a water park on the old Danube. The latter activity I was not so involved in because I was working and my husband took our daughter. We also took her for several meals; restaurants vary in terms of how friendly they are to kids. The elegant café culture is not so child-friendly (as we found), but we also took her to a chain restaurant (Maredo), which in terms of adult nutrition does not score highly, but they treated our daughter like a queen, with colouring pencils and activities. The Stiftsrestaurant Melk (the restaurant in the abbey at Melk) was also very kind to our daughter, with ice cream frozen into a collectable china cup in the shape of a dinosaur, which she was allowed to keep.
I believe there is a children's museum at Schönbrunn too, but we haven't explored it.
Good luck!

Be sure to have the tyke take a ride on The Big Wheel, a Ferris Wheel in the famous Prater - an iconic landmark of Vienna and one featured in various films like The Third Man.
Has been around for a long long time. Not sure what it's proper name is but my grandmother, born and raised in Viena, always fondly called it "The Big Wheel".
Hopefully 4-year-old will be allowed on - it moves rather slow so is not scary much.

In German it's the Riesenrad - sorry I forgot about it - excellent idea PalenQ!! Yes, 4 yr old is allowed on. My daughter and husband have done it twice. It's not an open seat but a closed booth, and not at all scary. There are other things at the Prater (pony rides) that your 4 y.o. might like, too.
