Hi Khalid, and welcome to Fodors.

Have I got this right? You are intending to drive from Rome to Malaga and then fly back to Rome?

and that after your 3 nights in Rome at the beginning of the trip, you have approx 15 days to do the rest of the trip, which has to be reduced by at least one to get you back to Rome for your return flight. Then there's the amount of time you may want to spend in Malaga. So in fact you may have less than 13 days all told.

By the looks of it you need to start with a good map - the route you are starting with is going on the wrong direction - "Nice, Monaco, Milan, Venice" is going in the wrong direction and even if you did it in reverse order is hardly on a direct route to Malaga.

Do you want to go to Venice? Milan? the best way to get to these places would be by train - you do not want a car in big italian cities and certainly not in Venice as there are no roads, only canals. And in any event you don't want a car in Rome - it will be worse than useless.

Have you looked at google maps to see what you are taking on? perhaps you think that 24 hours of driving on 12 days or so isn't that much, but believe me, you will find it hard enough when you are doing it. An adventure certainly, but not an easy one.

Grab a map, and start thinking practically about how you are going to do this, would be my advice.

To me it reads that they land on July 13 in Rome, get in a car and drive to Venice, Milan, Nice, Monaco, all the way along the coasts of France and Spain to Malaga, and then drive all the way back to Rome to fly home. In 19 days including arrival and departure days.

This is a lot of driving and not a lot of seeing things. Cars are useless in city centers - so for any days you spend there they will sit in a garage at about 35 ot 40 euros per night while you walk or take public transit inside cities.

I would look at some guidebooks to figure out which places you actually want to see/spend time in - versus how many days for just driving around in the countryside. If mostly cities and beaches then a car is a big fat waste of time and money. (And this is from someone who has done more than 20 road trips in europe - but in the countryside and small towns - cars are worse than useless in cities since centers of many are pedestrian only).

Also - do look at viamichelin.com to get info on the most scenic routes and approximate drive times (this is NOT the same as so many major cities).

Change your tickets to multi-city, flying into the first city you actually want to visit and out of the last city or nearby that you actually want to visit. You will save money in the end by not backtracking.

Cancel your car reservation. When you have a more firmed up, reasonable itinerary, decide which part is best done by train, and which part you might want a car for scenic, countryside driving.

To create a good itinerary, really think about the cities you want to see and how much time each will take. Think about country areas or small towns, what you want to see there, and how much time that will take. Once that is done, then you book travel, tickets, etc.

Lay your trip out as a plan, not just cities you have on a list.

July 13, depart Kuwait
July 14, arrive Rome
July 15, 16, 17 Rome
July 18, train to Venice
July 19, Venice
July 20, train to Verona, tour the day, train to Milan
Etc., etc.

Many cities will be difficult, if not impossible to drive in. You will be paying the car rental as well as expensive parking on days you are not even using the car. When you are driving, gas will be very expensive.

You do not have time for all you wish to do. Not counting the 13th or the 31st, you have only 17 days to actually travel - 2&1/2 weeks. Driving Rome to Southern Spain and back to Rome is not feasible.

I forgot to mention that drop off fees for hire cars rented in one country and returned in another can be prohibitive, especially if they do not abut each other. so renting in Italy and returning in Spain could cost a bomb.

sassafrass - To be fair to the OP [I'm trying] I think the plan is to drive to Malaga then fly back to Rome. I agree that open jaw would be better but even the OP isn't planning to drive both ways.

I think the OP intends to drive back . . .

>> . . . till malaga and scroling back to fly back again from FCO think 'scroling' means meandering back by car.
