Iceland is big (like Texas) and everything you might want to see is far apart. Car rental is possible, but there are also all sorts of busses and "taxis" that can take you to and from particular sites.Virtually every hotel can arrange transportation for you, with pick up and drop off at your hotel. One "must do" is The Blue Lagoon. We also enjoyed seeing where the European and N. American tectonic plates meet. There are waterfalls, active volcanoes..you name it. If I remember correctly, there is either or both an Iceland website and a Blue Lagoon website. Try typing those on a search engine and see what pops up. Have a wonderful time, and be sure to taste the local foods!
So what was first prize - 1 week in Philadelphia?
Well, thanks, Dan, I would have to say that Philadelphia and Iceland are equally attractive and worth visiting; Philadelphia may have a bit of an edge in museums and restaurants, but Iceland's scenic beauty makes it a strong competitor! (By the way, I've been to 25 or so countries and Iceland is my favorite
)
Lana, a week and a half should be enough time to get a good taste of Iceland; although the places are spread out, you can fly to the north quite easily rather than drive there. If you spend about a week in the south/Golden Circle area and Reykjavik there will be plenty to do and see (do a search on Iceland on this forum--there's a bit here!) and the planes to the north leave right from the city itself.
Although you certainly could spend more time there, a week and a half should leave you satisfied--until the next trip.....
Depending on what time of year you go, hiking in Thorsmork and Thingvellir, horseback riding, snowmobiling on the glacier, and the original Geysir would all be on my to-do list; do include the Blue Lagoon, as Kathy says.
Have a wonderful trip!
