11 Days Sardinia through Sicily to Malta (June 2015)

Hello! I am a Peace Corps Volunteer fresh from serving 33 months in Ghana, West Africa. I will be flying into Olbia near the end of June and I have 11 days until I have to meet up with a friend in Malta. I would love itineraries or suggestions for site seeing, some hiking and some beach time in both Sardinia and Sicily. I was thinking 5 days each place?? I don't mind cramming a lot of things into one day. Also, I am okay with renting a car in Sardinia and Sicily or with taking public transportation. I won't be flying between the places - most likely buses, ferries and car rentals. I'll most likely be staying at airbnb.com places or hostels - cheap, cheap!! I am traveling alone as well.

I did read something about this fantastic drive through Sardinia that sounded very picturesque. I want to see things off the beaten path but also the things that Sardinia and Sicily are known for although I tend to skip over a lot of museums since I'd rather be outdoors.

Also, my friend and I have no plans in Malta either. There we have just one week. We were just thinking a few days in the capital and then most of the time relaxing on Gozo.

Thanks for any advice, input, suggestions, etc.
