I have 10 days free between a stay in Cologne and Munich. Anyone have any suggestions where I can go? I would prefer train travel and like almost any tourist attraction, villages, museums etc.

You have a lot of options. Rothenburg OdT is a nice place to visit that is sort of in between. The Rhine area is easy to get to from there. In the alps South of Munich you can go to Ludwig country to see the castles or swing through Bertschesgaden and Salzburg. The trains may take you through Munich but you can reach all of these on the train.
