10-day honeymoon French Rivera/Provence

Hi,
I am new to this board and looking for advice for my 10-day honeymoon this July. We are flying in and out of Nice and will have a rental car for the whole trip. We would like to spend some of our time in and around Nice sightseeing and going to the beach. The other part of our trip will be visiting Aix, Marseille, St Remy, etc. How many days should get stay in each area? What cities should we stay in while we are there? I was thinking of staying 3-4 nights in Nice or Cannes, then spending 3 nights in and around St Remy and spend the last 3 nights in or around Nice again. We are planning on staying in both hotels and b&bs and would like to visit some wineries while we are there. Both of us have been to Southern France but haven't seen much outside of Nice and Monacco. Thanks for your help!

Much prefer Cannes to Nice as a "hub" to visit some wonderful places such as St. Paul de Vence, Mougins.

Must go for sunset dinner Seaside mountaintop village of EZE and dine in the hotel. So romantic, it's like a mile up in the air and you can see forever.

Visit Relais & Chateaux website for the best places to stay in France(gold crown).

If going to Cannes, best hotel is the Carlton - very classy. Get lounge chairs for the day on their pier. Also, find out when the fireworks are, they are a must see in Cannes. And most of the hotels set up special dinners on the beach for it. Contact the concierge at your Cannes hotel for info. Very special. We drive from St. Tropez to see them.

I am not a fan of Nice whatsoever, sorry. And you don't want to do both Nice and Cannes. Don't think there is anything romantic about Nice. The beaches aren't "nice". either.

To stay in Provence, I recommend the town of Le Baux - and stay at Le Baumanerie (my spelling may be off) . This is much smaller scale and will be a nice experience, but nicer than a B&B. You can spend a half day seeing St. REmy. No great places to stay in St. Remy. Isle-sur-La-Surge also great to visit especially during market day. A river runs through the town. Through web you can find out when the towns have market days.
Tour some wineries if you like wine. Enjoy the wines, there are no sulfites and the choices are wonderful. Bring back your favorites.

My tastes are just the opposite of NYer's - I much prefer Nice to Cannes. The building architecture is more interesting. IMO. Old Town, Cours Saleya, museums, outdoor markets, Blvd des Anglais, etc. fascinate me more than "things" in Cannes.

As far as a suggested itinerary goes, I would spend 3-4 nights in Nice/Cannes, then off to Aix for a night. Then to St Remy or the Luberon for 3-4 nights. To retuurn to the Nice area for your trip home, I would stay the last night in St Paul - not Nice. You'll want to visit St Paul and some of the surrounding countryside and villages anyway. It's close enough to the airport.

July is Lavender season in Provence. There are not any Lavender fields around St Remy, that I've seen. There are some in the Luberon and scads near Sault.

My wife & I have vacationed for 23 weeks in Provence & the Cote d'Azur. I've developed an itinerary for visiting this area that describes the "rough one" I suggested above in much more detail. The "Itinerary" has a detailed "Lavender Route", and a section on Provence Fabric, and Provence markets. I've sent it to over 500 people on this and the aol travel boards. E-mail me at [email protected] if you want a copy.

NYer and StuDudley are both right. I like Nice, but it's a very large city, and the beaches have pebbles. Cannes is much more of a 'beach resort' type of destination. To me, Nice is more 'citytrip'.
You don't mention a budget; the Carlton, as mentioned above, is fab, but very expensive. The Martinez is great too. If you end up staying somewhere less expensive, you can always spend a day on one of the hotel beaches, and rent lounge chairs.
The fireworks in Cannes on July 14th are gorgeous.
Do book now; July is a popular time, especially from July 14 onwards.
