1 free day in Germany: what to do in between Bacharach and Rothenburg?
Anybody have a suggestion?....
I have a week to spend in southern germany--- so I'm spending a night in Oberwesel, a couple nights in Bacharach, then ***a day to spare!*** before spending a couple nights in Rothenburg and heading to Frankfurt to fly home.
Any favorite spots that might capture something I'm missing, near this area or easily accessible by train, in between?......I'll be there in April.
I was thinking of spending the extra day in Munich? ......but am open to suggestion!

There are far more knowledgable folks than me on this board, but on one trip we had planned to go to Wurzberg (sp?) on the way from Bacharach to Rothenberg. (We didn't make it due to a train malfunction, though).

Oberwesel and Bacharach are so close that moving is inconvenient.
Suggestion: since you'll be in the area for 3 nights, you might want to get a 3-day VRM railpass from a yellow/gray "Regio-ticket" machine, good for the Rhine from Oberwesel north to Rolandseck on both sides of the river and good for the Mosel between Koblenz and Bullay. It's for all regional trains and buses in the area and costs 34 Euros for 1, 40 Euros for 2-5 people. Staying in O'wesel, where this pass is valid, makes good sense. To visit Bacharach, south of O'wesel, add on a regular ticket for 2.10 Euros each way.
Extra day: From Rothenburg, you could daytrip either to Nuremberg or to Würzburg very easily. Each has some interesting stuff to see. A Bayern ticket (daypass good for all of Bavariato get there and back, in the single version, is 21 Euros, 29 for 2-5 people.

For wine, Wurzburg - - Franconian wines are made from a variety of grapes and are earthy, spicy and distinctive. Wurzburg has classic baroque sites as well. For beer, Bamberg, with its unfiltered kellerbiers and smoky rauchbeers - - a world beer city, with great medieval character too.
