I will be in Switzerland for meetings for a brief 3-4 day visit next week. I would like to spend 1 day in Lucerne and 1 in Zurich over the weekend before returning home, and I am trying to figure out what the top things to see in each of those cities might be?

In Zurich there is an old town on both sides of the river through which one can wander. On the Left Bank of the river, at the base of that part of the old town there is a guild building containing a porcelain collection and a church with Chagall windows.

If you like museums, Zurich has a lot of them.
We enjoyed just walking through the neighbourhoods, along the river and lake, there's lots of shopping...

Well, they're all good!
Lucerne is compact so you can see every major thing of interest in a day - like the Lion's Monument, the Meisdag (sp?) Panorama and walk along the walks still hemming in the city on the north.
But the main attraction of Lucerne IMO is Lucerne itself and its stunning location on Lake Lucerne - a fjord-like lake girdled on all sides by mountains.
The two old wooden covered pedestrian bridges are the most famous sights so stroll over these, oogling the triangular, if i recall correctly, old pictures handing along the inner roof. (Bridges themselves are not ancient as both have burnt and been replaced in modern times but I believe the pictures were saved and are old - the cobwebs in summer are IMO stunning - interested in seeing if they are there in winter.
The top site near Lucerne is Mt Pilatus - one of the premier famous iconic Swiss mountain peaks. Take a train to Alpnachstad (or boat if still running) and then take one of Europe's most thrilling and allegedly its steeped I believe, mountain train up to the oft windy summit for spectacular views for miles and miles around - then take another thrilling device back down to suburban Lucerne - an aerial chairlift to Krens (name?) from where you can bet city buses back to downtown Lucerne.
