1-1/2 days in London-WWII Museums
Stopping in London on the way home from Ireland. Staying at the Marriott, Heathrow. Trying to do Theater night of arrival and tour next day to American Museum or Churchill War Room. (Interested in WWII sites) any suggestions for Trans. into theater and suggestions for tours?

Fran - You don't need a tour to go to the Cabinet War Rooms, just take the Heathrow Express into Paddington Station, then on the underground to the Westminster Station. It only takes about an hour to walk through the rooms (bunkers really)..very interesting. Sorry, I don't know the other museum.

As far a a tour for a short visit...I really like the double decker bus (orientation)tours run by the Big Bus Company or the 'Round London Sightseeing company...these take about 2 hours for the circuit but you can ride up top and they have great live guides. You can hop on and off also.

while the Churchill war rooms are interesting , they certainly would not take long to see .If you are really interested in WW2 I'd head for the Imperial war Museum..Interesting display, Blitz experience, wonderful galleries and a great place for lunch..and it is now free!

http://www.iwm.org.uk/

Imperial War Museum is great, although it's a little out of the way, it is worth it. A couple of extras: In Westminster Abbey there is a plaque, near the Tomb of the Unknown, honoring FDR, one of the very few non-Brits to be so honored.
Also, in the City, is the small parish church St. Clement Danes, which is
dedicated to the RAF and has many RAF
memorials inside.

Cabinet War Rooms (Churchills WWII CP) are by St James Park not far from Westminster Abbey and Whitehall. The Imperial War Museum is south of the Thames a half mile or so. It's a 5-10 minute walk from the tube stop. Both are Very worthwhile, especially if you are interested in Military History. (My wife enjoyed both and she's not. I second the HMS Belfast comment as well. Depends on how much time there is.
