When are Best Times for a South American cruise @ Cape Horn ?

Hola,
My partner & I are looking at booking a 14 day cruise from Valpariso, Chile, around the Cape Horn to Buenos Aires Argentina, with several stops along the way, and a few days of land touring at each end. Currently, we are looking at a Nov.23-Dec 5th 2008 cruise with Noreigian Cruiseline. > >

When would you say the best times to do this, considering the maritime conditions of the Drake Passage & wanting to avoid the high tourist season if possible? > >

We welcome any other suggestions/recommendations re: cruising/touring in this part of the world. Your time, expertise & feedback will certainly be appreciated. > >

Aloha from Hawaii,
HulaLady

Late November in Patagonia is like late May in Alaska. The weather can still be iffy. This is when the cruise lines first begin their 14 day excursions.

Of course, you could be very lucky and have great weather but a more sure bet would be mid-January thru February. This, however, is also the most expensive time. I took one once in early March right after the rates dropped and had very good weather.

Also, be aware that the Norwegian Dream has had some problems this year. You can read about them on cruisecritic.com. I'm not sure if they will be using the Dream on this itinerary again next year. Maybe they will have a newer ship.
