What is appropriate to wear for dinner on Alaskan cruise?

Going on Alaska cruise with NCL later this month. Can I wear capri pants to dinner? Sandles? My husband and I live in our blue jeans! What other clothes should we bring? Any suggestions on which restaurants are better than others on the ship?

Sandals and capri pants, and especially jeans, will not be permitted in the main dining rooms on any ship.

Most ships have two formal nights - where at least a tie for the man and nice dress for the female, are desired. Many will wear tuxedos and "prom" dresses to those dinners.

The rest of the cruise will be business casual, khaki pants and button-up shirt for the male and a pants suite or dress for the female.

We were on the Norwegian Sun in Nov. for a Caribbean cruise. There was one formal night in just one dining room. We ate in the informal dining room that night. We dressed very casually but no shorts or tee shirts. The ladies in our group wore linen cropped pants with linen blouses or casual summer dresses and sandals.I don't think they will throw you out of the dining room for wearing capris...aren't they just a little shorter than cropped pants? The men wore khaki pants, golf shirts or nice knit collarless shirts. In fact, my adult son even wore black jeans one night. You will see all kinds of dress at dinner. Some people go all out and just love to dress up...not me!!!I think as long as you don't show up looking like a slob you will not be turned away. We felt the caribbean cruise was very casual. I don't know if an Alaska cruise would be different. What determines the dress code? Destination or the ship? I have been on only 2 cruises so I am certainly not an expert!
We were very satisfied with the 2 main dining rooms so did not try the specialty dining for the extra charge. We did eat in Pacific Heights one night [no surcharge there]. That wasn't bad but nothing special.Have a great cruise. We loved the Norwegian Sun!!

You won't need sandals on an Alaskan cruise and capri pants are on the edge of acceptability. Take some mix and match "fall" type clothes, black pants and nice tops will go a long way. Be certain to be well prepared in your attire- you need a lightweight lined jacket, layers of clothes, rain gear, knit hat and gloves.

My first cruise, many years ago, was Alaska with Princess. The crowd on that ship (may have been the time of year) was older than I've found on recent Carribean cruises. Most people went all out on formal nights-sequins and custom tuxedos. It was great fun to people watch. They didn't turn anyone away for being underdressed. The scenery on Alaskan cruises if fantastic. Bring plenty of clothes for just sitting on the deck watching it roll by...

The only "written" "suggestions" I have ever noted on any cruise ship in terms of dining room attire, at night, were no shorts and no bathing suits.

I bet you money that a lot of the women will be "overdressed" in some people's opinions on your cruise..but a lot of people like to dress up because it is enjoyable. Regardless, I think you'd feel a bit out of place wearing jeans to dinner.

I suspect if you saw some of the people here and how THEY dress you would understand why they are intimidated by certain types of clothing.
