What happened to all the cruise deals?

After the tragic events of 9-11 the lines lowered prices drastically to try to keep things going. Now, 3 months later the deals are no different than prior to the tragedy, yet numerous sources are saying travel is down. Has anyone heard why the lines are not continuing many real specials? P.S. Please do responses about the lines operating at 99% capacity, we all know thats not true. Thanks

Actually a lot of the cruises are starting to get sold out.

If you do not like that answer, another explaination is that, cruises have a lot of overhead cost. They have to pay for staff, food, port charges, entertainment, cleaning supplies, fuel, the list goes on. They simply can not afford to allow all cabins to go for discount prices. They would lose money.

From Canada there was a lot of deals to Caribbean Islands, but it wasn't paying for the flights and room cost. They ended up grounding planes, and cancelling destinations, because they were filling up the planes, but losing a ton.
It is just business.

One thing that many seem to overlook is that cruises are traditionally very inexpensive in the Fall and early Winter months and when you add the discounts to that we had very low fares. Beginning about the second week of Feb. they start back up again. The holidays are busy too.

You can still find some pretty good deals. My wife found a NZ to Hawaii for 1400 pp. 14 day.

Norwegian has some pretty good ones on their web site. But no, it's not like it was in September.

My husband works for one of the lines and is not allowed to comment on web sites like this, but I think it would be appropriate for me to answer this question. The reason the super discounted fares stopped is that the line noticed no matter how low they went, there was no increase in bookings. Since there is a certain percentage that will still cruise no matter what happens there was no point in giving away cruises like this and thus the specials stopped.
Hope this helps.

I'm not sure what you folks are complaining about unless you are looking for "unreasonable" deals. I am cruising celebrity in March for about $500 (cdn) less than I could have last year. The deals to Alaska are so good I may have to go there in June. Having cruised each year for the past 5 yrs I have to say we are now seeing some of the best pricing ever.
