Has anyone said in cabin 1530. If so how was the cabin. We are on the the western caribbean cruise on the voyager Jan 13, 2008. We will be leaving out of Galveston.

How was the ship in general.

froggie, have you checked cruisecritic.com, on the Royal Caribbean forum? There are many recent postings on the state of the Voyager in general, and reviews of recent sailings (on the member review board). I searched there and saw some people asking about cabin 1530 in 2005, but no replies. You could ask there- I think chances are if anyone has stayed in that cabin you'd have a better chance reaching them there.

Webshots.com has lots of Voyager pics. The new bedding is in place, and I have not seen pics of Voyager rms. w/the new bedding, but I've seen other Voyager class ship pics and it looks good.

I have a cruise (first ever) on Voyager on 3/31/07 and will post back here and also do a review on cruisecritic.com also.

Thank emd for your response. My sister is a member of cruisecritic.com. So far no-one has answer her on that room. I do know its at the front of the ship.

My cruise director told me the following
Forward of your cabin, ie the white space, is the bridge where the Captain
and his crew control the ship. Above you is Deck 11 where the Day Spa and
Fitness Center are located.

I have read on cruisecritic about how the rooms at the very front of the ship get the most "movement" from the sea since the ship is going through the waves at the front of it, although I am not sure how much movement is really felt. But that was enough to make me book a room mid-ship on deck 9 on Voyager (for my first ever cruise on 3/31/07, coming up really soon), to avoid any movement and also to have rooms above and below me.

I wonder if you'll hear anything from the fitness center; I would think you wouldn't get noise there like you do if you are under a noisy bar or the pool, etc.

Did you choose that room at the front of the ship for some reason, or did you travel agent or someone pick it for you?

Perhaps if you post a question on here more generally, like has anyone stayed in a cabin at the front of the ship on deck 10 on any Royal Caribbean Voyager class ship (all Voyager class ships - Voyager, Navigator, Mariner, Adventure, Explorer - have the same cabin configurations according to my Royal Carib. brochure) you might get a response. Or post that more general question on cruisecritic on the Royal Caribbean and I bet you'd get a response.

froggie, just looking at the deck layouts in the Royal Caribbean brochure, if you are all the way in the front liek that, one thing to consider is that you are a heck of a long way from the dining areas, which are at the back of the ship (main dining rooms and WIndjammer cafe), and those will be places you will be going to more than once daily on most days. Just a thought.

I'll let you know what we think of the ship when we get back. Two weeks from now we will be in the ship...

Thanks emd. We were on the NCL this January and we were near the front of the ship near the fitness center and swimming pools. Actually on the same floor as both. We did not hear any noise from either one of them.

We had a mini suite with a balcony and did not feel any movement except the night the tornado hit Flordia. It was extremely windy that night and no matter where you were on the ship you felt the movement.

We told our cruise director that we want the D1 category as close to the top and towards the front of the ship as possible. So I guess we kind of picked it.

I know you will have fun on your cruise. Let me how your cruise goes at the end of March.

Did the Eastern Caribbean on Voyager this past December. If you've never been on a Voyager class ship then you'll enjoy the spacious layout (the promenade) and lots to do on board. If you've been on a newer ship then you'll notice a difference (but the ship is still great!) Must swim with sting rays if you haven't....

Thanks tennis woman for your response. We have never been on the royal caribbean before. I don't swim and scared to death of water but my sister finally convinced me to do the dolphin tour. This one you can stand on the pier and the dolphins will come to you so you can pet them if you are not a swimmer. If you are you can go into the water and swim with them.

We went on both the NCL Sun this year. We had a great time one this cruise line.

We went on the Carnival 2 years ago. I don't think we will ever use them again.

Hi Froggie,a couple points of interest for the RCI cruise:

1) If you did the dolphins, then I'd still recommend you try the stingrays (or at least see if you can go out on the boat with your travelmates!). My friend could not swim either but everyone wears a life jacket. However, you could stand on the sandbar for the mostpart. The water was usually 5" deep. It's a bit undaunting at first to see large black shadows weaving by...they aren't playful like dolphins(maybe stay on the boat).

2) RCI is 1 of the few cruiselines that still give you "dollars" for participating in activies, for which you can redeem for RCI stuff at the end...visors, t-shirt, keychain. You can keep the leftover $'s for the next cruise too. Sometimes they forgot to hand out the $'s so sometimes I had to "remind"...

3) I really like the fact that RCI (unlike many other cruiselines) does not automatically charge you for a set "tip" amount. You have envelopes at the end of the cruise to distribute to the people of your choice. Better service more tip! Less service less tip.

3) I'd adivse you to book on-line excursions for anything you really want to do to avoid disappointment if it's sold out and to avoid the line-up on the cruise.

Hi Froggie. Here is a review for you! My teen daughter and I LOVED Voyager. Best vacation of my life, and I travel quite a bit independently. Loved it so much that I have booked a cruise on Freedom of the Seas for the whole family this summer. I imagine traveling out of Galveston that the passenger make-up might be different than Miami sailings. We enjoyed the very international passenger make-up on our cruise. I have booked Freedom of the Seas western Caribbean route for 6/24/07, so I can tell you after that what the western ports are like...

Here is my review, Voyager, 3/31/07 eastern Caribbean sailing:

This was my 1st cruise. I booked in late Jan. '07, and paid quite a bit for a Junior Suite (JS) room for my 14 yr. old daughter and me. But luckily I had read up online and knew to check the prices every day in case of a price reduction, as RCI will give you a refund if you catch a reduction and call them, even after final payment. About one month before sailing there were 6 JS left and the price went way down. I had my travel agent call RCI and I got an $850 refund for each of us, total of $1700 refund! The price only went down for 2 days so it was good that I was checking and caught it.

Also, I originally had a JS between the two sets of elevators, but because I checked availability of all JS's every day online, I was able to see that a "hump" JS (in the area of the rear elevators, the part of the ship that curves out) became available and got reassigned to this great JS on the hump. This is a prime location, close to the elevators that take you to the dining rms, Windjammer, pools, kids clubs, and Royal Promenade. The only thing I had to walk a long way to use was the spa and work-out facilites which are forward on the ship.

I really got the jitters just before the cruise. I was worried because our JS was under the Royal Suite which has a player piano and I had read postings about being able to hear the piano in our JS. I was worried about people not dressing nicely for dinner, when my daughter and I were so looking forward to doing so; I did not want her to feel out of place if she was dressed up. I was worried about it being spring break. I was very ambivalent as it got towards date of sailing.

All my worries were unfounded. This ship was incredible, we LOVED it. Although there were 1200 kids on board on our sailing(!), they all seemed well-behaved and I never saw any rowdiness at all. And I certainly never saw any underage drinking or excessive drunkeness in public areas.

We flew into FT. Lauderdale and took Airport Express shuttle to the 4 Points hotel Miami Beach ($18 apiece), very convenient. Hotel looks ok in lobby but room needs work, furniture nicked up like crazy and old carpet, very dirty. Our rm. was oceanfront with wet bar, fridge, microwave, full sofa, 2 queens, nice balcony.

We spent a few hrs. on the beach (paid $10 apiece for lounge chairs) and then cleaned up and went to Adventura Mall to shop, get our nails done, and have a birthday dinner. There is a bus that goes directly to the mall right on Collins Ave in front of the hotel, 25 min. and easy. This mall has over 200 stores and is very nice. Great restaurants also. We ate at Cheesecake Factory, although we wished we had tried the Grand Lux Cafe, which everyone said was best. We took a cab back to hotel because it was 9 pm ($30).

Next day got to cruise terminal by taxi at noon. Porter took our bags right out of the cab trunk and checked them onto the ship, we never had to handle them! Easy check-in and got on the ship at 12:30.

By the time we found our room, it was 1 pm and we were able to get in. This JS was great. Brand new bedding was VERY comfortable, bright nice colors, everything looked clean and new in the cabin. Bathrrom was big enough for one person at a time and we were glad to have the extra shower space in the tub area. Cabin is right on the "hump", so very close to rear elevators where you go for most activities and dining and promenade access. We never heard ANYTHING from hallway, elevators, or other rooms. It was so quiet. Balcony was great, spent my mornings out there while daughter slept. Walkin closet was good for us, as was double the desk space. We could have done without one of the two chairs in the seating area as we rarely sat inside, but we used them for putting clothes and stuff on as the week went on.

I took one of those mesh over door shoe holders and instead of putting it on the door, I hung it on the small towel rack between the tub and the toilet in the bathroom. This was GREAT as even though we had about a foot of counter space on each side of sink and two small medicine cabinets in the corners over sink, we had alot of beauty stuff, and we put it all (hair dryer, cosmetics, sunscreens, hairbands, perfumes, air freshener, etc.) in the mesh holder. Mesh is much better than the plastic holders. I got this one from walmart.com for about $20. If you had a smaller interior room this would be a lifesaver.

I also brought clorox wipes and wiped down all the nobs, remote, safe, etc. when we got in the cabin. Don't know if it helped but neither of us got sick; we did handwash alot also.

Our room steward came right away (Christopher, from the Philippines) and he arranged to get the bed split up for us that afternoon. He made towel animals 4 of the 7 nights for us and left choclates at bedtime. Our luggage came at about 8 pm that night.

FOOD: 1st seating 6 pm

Dining Room dinners were a MAJOR HIGHLIGHT for us!!! We had a table for 2 as requested and had the most wonderful crew. They gave us royal treatment every night. Head waitress was Souad from Chile, asst. waiter Sandy from India, and their supervisor was Singh from India. My daughter is vegetarian and so is Singh, so he took special care to be sure she liked her food selection each night. The menus were very vegetarian friendly, my daughter always had a salad and entree she liked.

Souad and Sandy were so gracious. They talked to us personally each night asking how the cruise was going, what did we do that day, and took care to be sure we knew what the entree options were like. I travel the world for work and stay in 5 star hotels and I have never had a nicer dining experience for 6 nights in a row as I had here. This was wonderful service! 1st night I asked for olive oil and balsamic vinegar to go w/my bread, and it appeared every night thereafter without asking. Souad helped me pick wines. I got a total of 3 bottles for the 7 nights, and each night she had the remaining wine from night before on our table when I sat down!

Dinner food was very very good in the dining room. Some of the entrees I had were lamb, duck, lobster, and two fish dishes (mahi mahi and cod). Everything was cooked to perfection, not overdone w/rich sauces and too much seasoning but instead simply prepared and very flavorful. We had caesar salad each night even though it was not always on the menu, we just asked and got it. Desserts were great.

We dressed up nicely each night and went all out for formal nights. I did not see anyone in our area of the room in jeans or shorts any night- everyone looked very nice and it was very civilized, no screaming kids.

We had room service breakfast (eggs, fruit plate, pastries) each day. They called 5 min. before to say it was coming (always right on time) and then called 5 min. after it came to be sure it was ok! I took my own "one cup at a time" coffee maker and good coffee and little flavored creamers and made my own coffee each morning (I can't get up without a cup) and found this better than the room service coffee.

We ate in Windjammer each day for lunch. Good selection, nice salad bar, hot food, no complaints there and we got to try a little of many different entrees. Never encountered any long lines here.

The one disappointing dining experience was Portofino. We booked dinner one night (the night we were on St. Thomas til 5 pm, as our dinner seating was 6 pm and we didn't want to rush) and considered canceling because we liked the dining rm. so much, but we went. It was not good. Service was slow (stood 10 min to get seated although the restaurant was only 1/2 full and no one else was waiting to seat), they were supposed to already have my wine bottle from the dining room (I called them about this and our waiter set it up but they didn't go get it) and they never got it til I was half way done w/my entree, food was way over-sauced and just not good. Tables are very close together and we could hear every word the next table said (there was just a plant and 10 inches between us). The veal dish was tough, sauce was overpowering, it had some weird ingredients stuffed inside- I found it inedible. The only vegetarian dish was a pasta w/cream sauce and mushrooms. The sauce was so rich and heavy my daughter took one bite and stopped. The waiter was not friendly, and told us that at Portifino, "everything is 10 times better than the dining rm." Not so for us. We really wished we had eaten in the dining rm.

SHIP ACTIVITIES:

We LOVED the Royal Promenade shopping! We bought lots of very nice costume, cubic zirconia, and Swarovski jewelry. My daughter got a cute Roxy dress. We gravitated to this area in our spare time, always something going on here.

Scrapbooking class was GREAT! We went three times, each time it was offered. The leader was a young man, Cyn, from Mexico City. He gave us packets of materials to make pages for a scrapbook to remember the cruise. Lots of bright colorful cutouts of cruise-related things, and he demonstrated how to make special fold-out pages, doo-dads, etc. I highly recommend these classes, and Cyn is funny, cute, energetic, and attentive.

The wine tasting class was fun for me. This took place one afternoon in the dining room. I paid $10 extra for this. We tasted 6 wines and had cheese and fruit plates. The wine steward was funny and informative, and after class he spoke to me at length about wines I was interested in on the wine lists.

I also really liked the class on gemstones and diamonds. This took place in the Schooner bar one afternoon. Geoff, the shopping guy, did this w/slide show and handouts and it was very informative re how to know what you are buying, what all the different stones and, how to choose them. I used his hints when I went to Cardows in St. Thomas to make purchases there.

My daughter went to the 12-14 yr old activities a few times. Once it was a scavenger hunt at night and there were about 40 kids there but the staff never showed up. Instead she and two of the kids went to play mini-golf together. I complained about this to the guest relations the next day and they called back and said the staff got mixed up and went to the wrong place for the activity (what? it was right on the kid's Compass paper.) She never really hooked up w/any other kids and gave up on the activities after a few evenings. She sunbathed on the observation deck a few times and we stayed in touch w/walkie talkies. The pools were not good on this trip as it was incredibly windy. Also had rough seas the 1st 5 days, supposedly due to an undersea earthquake, and they closed the pool twice due to this. There were big waves in the pool a few days!

Captain's Q&A session was interesting and informative. We used the workout facility 5-6 times and it is awesome.

Didn't do rock climbing or ice skating- next time!

SPA TIME:

I had several treatments. A 50 min. massage, a hot stone massage, and a 50 min. spa taster with hot stone massage and mini-facial, and teeth whitening. The hot stone massage was done by a young man from Cuzco, Peru (close to Machu Pichu) and I had a very interesting talk with him; he had just joined RCI a week before and had previously worked at a doctors office and gave a very good massage. The teeth whitening was "GOSmile", the new treatment that is popular. I did see some improvement and bought the follow-up materials, 3 wks worth, although he wanted me to buy 7 wks worth. I did buy some facial products, not because I was pressured but because I wanted to. I used the sauna and steam room and enjoyed them.

PORTS:

NASSAU: Too quick. We only had 4 hrs here, not long enough to do an excursion for us. We just walked around town and shopped. Daughter got great knock off handbags at the straw market.

ST.THOMAS: We shuttled to downtown and shopped. I went to Cardows and bought a nice diamond and blue topaz set. We shopped at the outdoor market. We were going to take a taxi to Sapphire Beach but daughter wanted to go back to ship at 1 pm, so she did so (sunbathed in peace and quiet) and I shopped right next to the ship at Havensight Mall. Found a great little shop that carries only items made in St. Thomas and bought indigenous liquors (pomegranate, hibiscus) and bath products made from flowers growing on the island. Also got duty free liquors and cosmetics at AH Rise.

When I went back to the ship, I had a Johnnie Walker set of 4 small bottles of scotches in a box, several miniatures of vodka, and 3 pint bottles of the indigenous liquors. It was all in the same bag, and when they screened it they only made me give up the Johnnie Walker set (?). This reappeared in our room on the last night of the cruise.

SAN JUAN: LOVED THIS!! We did a self-guided walking tour of old San Juan. I had no idea it was so Spanish/European in flavor, like a colonial town. Colors and architecture are great. Walked along the massive stone city walls and to El Morro, very cool. Then walked to the cathedral, which was beautiful and unique; we stopped to pray here as we are Catholic and it was a few days before Easter.

Stopped at Collins cigars a few doors down and got cigars for husband. Went shopping a few more doors down at Coach outlet and another local boutique w/great clothes and shoes. On way back to ship got handmade belts for son at outdoor market close to pier.

Labadee: LOVED THIS TOO! We did the water park (one with the big inflated icebergs, seesaws, etc.) and the big slide and then just relaxed on the beach and in the water at the far end by the outdoor/indoor market (the cove area). Zipline being built in that area. Nice local entertainment at lunch. Lunch was just ok. Shopped at the market. This was the only tender on the itinerary, thank goodness. The day went very fast.

NIGHTIME ENTERTAINMENT:

Ice show was phenomenal. Broadway style show was ok, I enjoyed it more than daughter. Headline "a capella" group was very good. Love and marriage game show was fun.

I went to several bars and acts at night while daughter was at teen activities or reading in cabin. Enjoyed High Notes for jazz, Cleopatra's Needle for Latin, and piano in the Schooner bar.

We had lots of professional photos done- really liked the casual ones where you lay/sit on ground w/white backdrop on floor and behind you. We wore pink and white and those pics look great.

Parades were ok, not really too organized but colorful. We always gravitated towards the Royal Promenade...

OVERALL:

LOVED the cruise. Best vacation we have ever had, great value for the $. Great for mother and daughter time. Was not expecting such great service everywhere (with exception of Portfino) and so much fun. Surprised at how international the guests were. Only place that felt crowded was the elevators. Very friendly ship!

We have booked a Western Caribbean cruise on Freedom in late June so the rest of the family can enjoy it also.

Thank you for this nice trip report! We've been on the Voyager twice as well as the sister ships, Mariner and Navigator. Based on your review (you tried lots of different things) you are going to LOVE the Freedom! You liked the workout area....wait till you see the gym on this baby! And the Promenade on the Freedom has lots of extra seating where the Cafe is. Since you obviously like wine, the wine bar on Freedom has different "flights" available to taste and compare. They also give you yummy appetizers. They have many excellent tastings and classes there- far better than the one in the dining room. I hope you joined the free Crown and Anchor Club, you'll get some perks on your next cruise. We sailed Freedom in Feb and booked Liberty for Jan 2008. Love RCCL and LOVE the big ships and all they offer!

Thanks for that inspiration LLindaC! I was a little worried about Freedom and paying so much without as much chance of getting a price reduction. But we alos loved the big ship and having so much to do. With my teen son coming this time, I know the kids will want to use the karioke place and flowrider, etc. as well as everything else, and I am looking forward to the wine bar and classes and the workout facilities based on your comments.

I E-Mailed my sister (Froggie2655) your nice review and she asked me to reply to you since her computer at home is down and her computer at work blocks this website.

Sounds like you and your daughter had a wonderful cruise. I can't wait for Froggie and me to leave in January for our third cruise (but first on RCL). I surprised her and upgraded us to a Grand Suite since Uncle Sam and the Louisiana Government was very generous with me on my tax refunds. I did tell her that she better not get use to the Grand Suites because this is a one-time deal only, no matter how many refunds I may or may not get and it won’t matter whose birthday we are celebrating either.

We both love dressing up for dinner (thanks to a brother who belongs to a Madri Gras Krewe in New Orleans) so I am glad to hear that we will get to wear some of our gowns that we haven’t worn in several years. Unlike NCL's free-style dining that only had one formal night for a 7-day cruise. Although I have to admit we did enjoy our cruise on NCL.

And thanks to your review I called Charlie, our travel agent, and requested a table for two. It makes sense to know that if you are sitting at a table for two, compared to a table for 8 or more, you will get more attentive service. And since we do live 400 miles apart we can use this time to talk and catch up on things we have done throughout the year without boring strangers at our table.

I was able to get someone from another chat room to E-Mail the menus and I think that I will order the appetizers and salads from the Vegetarian Menu (I know why your daughter liked them) and my Entrée from the regular menu.

Thanks for the information on Portofino’s. Since our grandparents on our mother’s side were immigrants from Italy we tend we think that just because a restaurant has an Italian name it has to be authentic and good. We were planning on eating at Portofino’s for Froggie’s birthday but thanks to you, you helped us from having an unpleasant birthday dinner. I guess we will eat at Chops Steakhouse that night instead. Unless of course, Wednesday night is one of the formal nights then we will eat in the main dining room.

We have been to the Western Caribbean twice already; once out of New Orleans and once out of Galveston and will be going back there a third time. Only two of the islands will be repeat tours for us; Cozumel and Costa Maya. I think that you and your family will enjoy that part of the Mexican Rivera. My sister and I plan on leaving out of Miami on a cruise to the U.S. Virgin Islands but it won’t be for another 2 years since I do not fly. So when I retire and we can take our time and spend two extra days on the road driving then we can take our dream cruise of touring the Eastern Caribbean and leaving out of Miami.

Since you plan on flying into Galveston please remember that you will have to fly into Houston and then get transportation to and from Galveston. And, you will be in the middle of hurricane season. Just to play it safe if I were you I would fly into Houston a day or two and then stay in Houston a day or two after the cruise before flying out again. That way you won’t miss any flights. Our first cruise should have been out of New Orleans but Hurricane Katrina closed the Port of New Orleans so the group we were with had to leave from Galveston. While on the cruise we spent an extra two days at sea because Hurricane Rita came along and closed the Port of Galveston. Our cousins from Nevada and Arizona who were traveling with us missed their flights back home because of this. Or you can always book a late flight leaving Houston the same day you come back to port. But I do travel through Houston every several weeks and you never know when you are going to be stuck in traffic for hours at a time.

Hi Baxter and Froggie! Regarding the issue of whether to have tablemates or not, a lot of people say having tablemates is a great part of their cruise. But I do not dine with strangers at home and my daughter and I just wanted time alone to talk and visit, since we are always so busy at home around dinner time (she is a competitive swimmer and is always getting ready to go swim every night around dinner time, son plays baseball, everyone going different ways). Once you get on the ship, go see the Maitre'D in the main dining room right away, before your first night dinner. Ask to see your table- the table number will be on your Set Sail card. If it is not a table for two, tell the Maitre'D you rerquested one and really want one and they will try hard to accomodate you. If you have early dinner booking as we did, I think this is easier, as there are mre families at that seating and more tables for 2 available (btw, we had no families w/little kids around us, even though we did have 6 pm dining).

Regarding Portofino: We did have a bad experience. but many others have better experience there, and you might want to give it a shot and see if they have improved. Our dining room manager, Singh, came over the night after we came back to the dining rm from our Portofino dinner the night before, and asked how it was. I told him everything honestly, and he took notes and told me he was very sorry and that it is his job to make sure no on else has that happen to them, and that he would report it. The next day we had some calls on our messages on our phone in the cabin from Portofino. I was never able to hook up with the manager who had called but they removed the surcharge from our bill and apologized over the messages. So they tried to make amends.

There is NO CHOPS on Voyager! It exists on some other ships, like Freedom that we are going on in late June. But not on Voyager so do not think you are going there...

There is no separate vegetarian menu in the dining room; it is all one menu but there are always appetizers and entrees at every meal suitable for vegetarians and it's very good.

We do not leave from Galveston on Freedom in June, we leave from Miami. But I used to live in Houston for 1st 30 yrs of my life so I know what you are saying re transport to Galveston and Houston traffic (LOL, my house was right on the 610 loop!). I liked the international passengers who sailed from Miami with us, it made for an interesting mix on the cruise, and I imagine that one does not get that international mix when sailing from Galveston.

BTW, did you know that you can preorder special stuff for your sister for her birthday? On the RC website you can order a birthday package- they will have your cabin decorated for a birthday when you arrive, and for $7-8 they will do a small but very nice birthday cake and deliver it either to your stateroom or to your dining table. Also, your waiters will do a candle in a dessert and sing to her, they ddi that for us, I jsut told them whne I booked that it was my birthday the 1st day of the cruise, and my daughter's birthday the week before, which it was.

We will be on the cruise for my birthday as my sister mentioned. My sister's birthday is February 26 so we will celebrate both birthdays at this time.

Even though we are leaving out of Galveston; we will not have to drive. We booked our cruise with KTDY99- a local radio station in Lafayette Louisiana. They get about 8 to 10 busses to take you to the port. It is an extra $70.00 per person, but well worth it. They have been doing this for the past 4 or 5 years.

My sister works in Lafayette and lisens to that station; that is how we found out about it. People come from all different parts of the United States.

Maybe you might want to think about going with them the next time you decide on a cruise. The radio station along with travel Machine have private parties every night. They are a lot of fun.

The last night of the cruise they start selling cruise tickets for the next year. If you book with them a week or 2 right after the current cruise has ended you can save almost $300 or more a person. As the weeks go by the prices goes up.
