transfers in Venice

We're thinking about TA cruise in Nov., 2015, Venice to Ft. Lauderdale. Curious if getting from the airport to the ship, or the hotel if we fly in a day early, in Venice, is done by water. We've never been to Venice and just wondering how those shuttles are done. Thanks.

The night before our cruise out of Venice we stayed in a hotel just across from the People Mover and main bus terminal (there are a number there to chose from).
On the day of the cruise we just walked across the road, bought our people mover ticket (only a couple of euro, from memory), took the escalator up to the platform then took the train from there to the cruise terminal. The PM is just a shuttle train that caters only for the terminal. From there it was a few minutes walk to the dock for our ship. There are many docks all in a row, with none very far to walk.

If you'd rather stay in the main tourism part of Venice, you can take a vaporetto (ferry) directly to a stop at the terminals.

If you came directly from the airport, your bus would drop you off at the main bus terminal, then you'd take the PM as above.
We decided not to risk any problems with flight arrivals, so stayed the previous night in the hotel. Di

You have quite a few choices. You cant take a shuttle or even public transit from the airport to Piazzale Roma. You have picks of hotels by Piazzale Roma or by the airport. We stayed by the airport while we were there and took the bus in and out of Venice daily. Hotels by airports are general more modern.

If you are heading out one day early and don't plan to stay around in Venice, then Piazzale Roma would be a better choice. If I were you, I will go a few days early and enjoy Venice before boarding the ship.

Getting to the ship from Piazzale Roma is easy. Take the people mover which is very cheap and it takes you to the cruise terminal. The cruise line offers shuttle to take you to and from the people mover to the ship.

One caution: heavy luggage. Steps and bridges all over the place so a heavy suitcase or lots of luggage would be a problem.

There is a vaporetto direct from the airport into Venice, but often you still have to walk a while to get to a hotel. If this is an issue, definitely choose a hotel that's near a vaporetto stop. You can also take a land taxi or airport bus direct to Piazzale Roma (I did the latter and found it quite convenient and cheap). So it's really a matter of whether you WANT to come into Venice by water, which may be the case. The vaporetto takes quite a bit longer.

And as others have said there are also hotels directly on Piazzale Roma or just across a small bridge in Santa Croce (I've stayed at the Papadopoli, which is very close to Piazzale Roma). There are also hotels across the bigger bridge near the train station, but that one is harder to negotiate with luggage.

Getting to the ship isn't so hard, either. You take the vaporetto to Piazzale Roma, where you can hop on the so-called "People Mover". Water taxis are also an option but are very expensive. It's also easy to take a land taxi from Piazzale directly to the cruise ship, and that's by far the most convenient way and isn't horribly expensive. Venice is a big cruise port, and there are many options, so it really depends on whether you can negotiate bridges and cobblestones with your luggage or not.

We flew to Venice early to spend a few days. There is a bus from the airport to Piazzale Roma, all by land. We stayed at Arlecchino hotel, next to the plaza. This is also the final stop for the vaporetto that goes along the Grand Canal.

Our cruise line was NCL, they had a free shuttle from P.le Roma to the ship, so we didn't use the people mover. Some cruisers complained that the stop of the mover is too far from the ship, especially if you have luggage.

Most of Venice is on islands, so you need either a water bus or a water taxi, depending on how much you want to spend. Usually you can email the hotel, and they will tell you how to get there.

If you haven't been to Venice, I strongly suggest to spend at least 2 days there, or more if you can. Get the vaporetto pass if walking bridges with steps is a problem, and explore. It's a unique place, you will have great memories.

New rules coming into effect for May 2015. The Venice City Council has decided to ban lugging your roller luggage through its street. The fine is 500 Euros. I would have laughed it off if the news was released on April 1. No sure how that can be enforced.

The new rules, which will require luggage to be transported on quieter air-filled tires, are the idea of City Commissioner Victor Zapparlorto, according to the Il Messaggero newspaper.

City officials have reportedly said the noise from hard-wheeled suitcases and traders using trolleys was causing "serious discomfort."

There were also concerns about the "progressive deterioration" of historic marble steps, stone pathways and footbridges around Venice's old canals.

I have read elsewhere in these forums that this proposed new law doesn't apply to suitcases, just carts etc used to deliver to various premises.

As far as the cruise terminal is concerned, a water taxi direct to the dock that your ship is moored at, from Sty Marks or the Grand Canal area will probably set you back around €80. It's certainly worth considering if there are 4 or more in your party.
