It may depend on the ship and your expectations, but I enjoyed a splendid six-night crossing (Southampton to NY) on Queen Mary 2 this past summer.
The only downside was that it wasn't longer.
My review, including photos and descriptions of activities and events is at http://cruisediva.com/qm2_crossing_diary.htm
I agree that a crossing is the only way to go!

Never done this, but I think it would depend on your vacation preferences. Sounds wonderful to me, since it is sometimes difficult to decide if I need a vacation to relax or one to see interesting things - this way you get both. I could easily spend that time sleeping, eating, reading, staring at the ocean, napping - but my husband would go insane after about 36 hours unless he could spend a lot of time electronically connected to work. So depends on what you are about.

We maybe joining you on the cruise.. lol. Did the 17 day cruise last year from Barcelona to Ft. Lauderdale with two days in Barcelona and loved it.. The days at sea were NOT boring because Parrot Pop took a digital photography course at what was a bargain price and there was always something to do. As a matter of fact a few times we found ourselves torn between two things at the same time..It is better to do it from Europe than from the East Coast, because you have the restful days at sea before coming home. We loved the Century and condidering the ship has been rehabbed and the ports are ths this year incredible...Morocco (already have te name of a guide) , CanaryIslands etc. I love the idea. It;s true...flying over is expensive.. but it willbe in sort of off season.. We/I have no inclination of ever doing the Caribbean again or Alaska (never done it) but cruising Europe this way is a "steal" . If you want more info..please write me [email protected]

Hi...Parrot Pop does very well on the computer and is on his third or fourth digital camera and was dubious about taking an hours course for $20.00...which we later found out is one of the "steals" on cruise ships.. He took two of the courses and found alot of hints that he uses.. As it was he took well over 1000 pictures on that cruise... I can tell you right now that we have pre-booked him... and told him to hold the date. I will send hm a message to him.. What dates did you need him for.? [email protected]
