So exactly what are the repurcussions for failure to dress "formal"?

I ask out of curiousity. We're taking a Celebrity cruise in a few weeks. There are three formal nights. I note someone asked about dress code on the QM2.
Bringing two of my suits along and my wife is something of a fashion maven. Not intending to wear an Ed Hardy shirt, just curious what they do if someone does.

Don't know Ed Hardy. My experience is that nothing happens. Some ships require at least a coat and tie or maybe just a jacket or they will not seat. I known people who bring nothing and simply skip the formal nights. The most I take is one black sport coat but has a formal cut to it and wear over white pants with bow tie. Looks pretty good. On less than formal nights, but not casual, long tie over a olive color pants works well.

Not much. Worst case scenario, on some ships, they may lend you a tie and a jacket if you're wearing a dress shirt. Question is do you want to wear their "loaners"?
Okay, they may refuse service and you have to eat elsewheree at the ship, that is the absoultely worst case. I have not seen anyone refused service wearing a shirt and dress pants. However, I have seen people turned away with blue jeans, shorts, or t-shirts.
In almost all cases, formal nights mean a shirt/tie/jacket for men and less restrictions on women. Cocktail dresses, gowns, pant suits, almost anything you wear to work would be acceptable.

Try bringing one dark suit..lol, several different shirt and ties... it works..lol. Yes, we women love to dress.. If you decide on less shirts..you can send one out to be cleaned.. Parrot Pop has some old retro (he hasn't worked in years) ties and never fails to get comments on them..

Taking 2 suits seems excessive - especially considering the extra air charges for overweight luggage. It is hard for some to believe, but the F Scott Fitzgerald age of cruising is long gone. Take a blazer and a tie and wear it with whatever long pants you have along. Actually, you see some formal evening clothes, but in reality it's usually the first formal night only.

In my experience of over 30 years, nothing happens.
2 suits is one too many.
Due to the casualness of our society, my husband went from
tux on first cruise, dinner jacket on second, and navy blue
blazer & tie on 3rd which continued thruout rest of cruises.

Consequences - if it is really bad they politely direct you to the buffet when you arrive at restaurant; if it is moderately bad and you have any sense of propriety at all, you feel uncomfortable. They never throw you overboard.
But a blazer, dress shirt and pants, tie and non-sneaker/sandal shoes will do it. Or bring one suit. Even if I was sitting with the same people every night for dinner I can not imagine noticing if a man was wearing the same suit 3 times - and in the unlikely event that I did, I can not imagine caring.

One suit. With the hundreds of people no one remembers the color of your shirt and tie and how many times you have worn it. You could wear the same thing to dinner every night and no one would care except your wife.

Just returned from a Baltic cruise on RCI. Their info said two formal nights and one dressy casual night but they actually had one formal night. On formal night, the guy in line in front of us had on levis and no one said a thing to him. Most of the men had on sports jackets. Most women had on dressy dresses or cocktail dresses, but I saw casually dressed women also. I wouldn't take an excess of dress clothes since you only wear them a few hours each time.

I just took a Baltic cruise with HAL...two formal nights. You know what I did...for $19 I went to a mail order place and bought a navy blue blazer...had an oxford blue button down shirt, a tie and wore my blue jeans. Did have the decency to not wear my sneakers....it was absolutely fine. Nobody would know the differencfe but the answer to the question is the worst that will happen is they won't let you sit in the main dining room but send you to the buffet for dinner (or you can use room service).....on HAL'S Eurodam, they had lobster tails on formal nights both times but you know something...after taking my jacket and tie off and taking off my shoes and putting on sneaker, I went up to the Lido just out of curiosity and guess what...they had lobster tails (had 2 more), shrimp cocktail (had 2 more) and there was no problem whatsoever! May not even bring the $19 blazer next time.
