Sign on the door?
Reading the CruiseCritic - some put out signs on the doors, it may be a good idea as my husband's vision is not good enough to see the cabin number unless he gets close to the door, and the first 2-3 days not easy to find the cabin.
So, my question is, somebody mentioned magnets. I don't remember, are those doors metal, will they hold a magnet? I can bring a cheap one from home in case some child takes it off.
Did you ever post any signs on the door (besides do not disturb) ?

Cannot remember signs but have have seen lots of ribbons and other items attach to the door knob. Second, on all of our ships there has been a small metal holder next to the door that holds newspaper, notes from the ship, etc. I have seen small hocks on the box to hang little dolls, figurines, etc. to make the location. I am sure the doors are metal since there is very little wood on the ship.

Thank you, both! I'll bring one or more magnets, and if it/they will be taken off, I'll tie a ribbon.
Must be the same as a ribbon on the suitcase to notice the door - my husband did try once, and his key card did not work on another door

I see one problem with magnets and a sign on a door. The doors are slightly recessed so a flat object, like a sign, would not be seen until in front of the door much like a room number. Something attached to the mail box or the door knob would be visible from down the hall way.
But you do not have to have bad eye sight to not find your room. We are just back from an Oct cruise. Our room was one floor below the dinner room level and near the stairway. One evening we followed another couple down the stairway, around the corner and then watched them put their card key in our door. We held back a bit just to watch. When his key didn't work she used her key. Now they began to panic because neither key worked, and she asked, "Now what do we do?" We stepped up and quietly suggested that their keys probably would work in their door. They were slightly embarrassed and we all chuckled a little about how all doors look alike. They were off one stairway and one bank of rooms. Could happen anyone. I think on the next cruise we will mark our door since this has nearly happened to us before. And we have good eye sight.

I don't get it. There are cabin numbers on the doors. They go in sequences. Some ships even put your last names on the door or the "mail box" by the door. How can you miss that? Also, the carpets on the floors are color coded. One trim color for port side and another trim color for starboard side.
Since almost all doors are recessed, signs and ribbons on the door or door knob won't work as you won't see it down the hall. You can try a ballon on the hallway ... but you are on the wrong deck or wrond side of the ship, you won't see it either.
Best tip to find your cabin, memorize the deck (which floor #), the side (port or starboard), front or back of ship and then the art work (pictures) by the stair case / elevator or the hallway.
I have been lost trying to find the library, the interet cafe, card room, lounges etc but never the cabin (yet).

Eschew, thank you, honestly, I've never noticed color-coding of carpets!! Will pay attention next time!
On the last cruise, we had to check ourselves: we got out of the elevators, the stairs are ahead of us, we're going right. Or if the stairs are behind, we're going left.
Yes, there is a number on the door, but it's so nice to have something personal! I found on our fridge, forgot about it, Fodor's magnet! A Fodorite made it for a GTG, and mailed to me when I asked. This is what I will be proud to display!

Dayenu, the hallway carpet trims are subtle. For example, the Princess ships have red trim (edges/stripes) on one side of the ship and blue trim on the other side of the ship. Don't quote me on this but I think it is blue on port side (even number) and red on starboard side (odd number). The other cruise lines has similar subtle hints. You just have to look for it (or ask the staff to show you the dfferences). I am surprised that the ships don't tell everyone that.
Once you are out of the elevator, look at the carpet along the hallway. Decide which hallway carpet is your hallway and go from there. Going by staris are misleading.
Exiting an elevator at the front of the ship facing the stairs, the right side is starborad and left is port. Exiting from an elevators facing the back of the ship will means left is starboard and right is port.

Well... I will definitely post after the cruise... for now I feel a little silly for not noticing that on Princess and RCCL. Now I am "armed with knowledge" and ready for the cruise in 23 days!!

Can't tell you much about the subtle differences, if any, on the NCL ship's hallways. Been on their ship once and that's it. No great big desire to return any time soon.
My memory of NCL were tons of bright color on the decor and lots of people and line ups for getting on and off the boat. They ran out of food items in the dining room, and the bar staff were pushy - sell sell sell. Overall, it was not exactly a 10 out of 10 experience. I heard they have improved and they are much better now. But with so many other choices, they will have to wait.

We were on the Jade's Mediterranean cruise Nov 26- Dec 8. I had heard mixed reviews of NCL, but I got to say I was pleasantly surprised by how great a trip this was.
While there are lots of extra costs, it was easy to avoid as there was never any pressure. We dined in the restarants and buffets that were included - not in the restaurants with extra charges - and enjoyed every meal.
With all the mega-ships these days, there's always going to be people wanting to go somewhere at the same time, so yes, there are lines getting off the ship. Lines didn't seem any worse than on the Celebrity cruises we've taken.
Decor is a bit bright, but the ship was clean, the ports of call were fantastic, service was good, and the price was affordable.
I wouldn't hesitate to book another NCL cruise.
