Short Cruises
We would like to go through the Panama Canal. Although we are well-traveled, this would be our
first cruise...for several reasons. I would like to find a cruise with the shortest time aboard. We could fly anywhere and pick up on one.
Any Suggestions appreciated.

Do you want to do a "full transit"?
If you want to minimize those long sea days you can go on Windstar (a luxury line), fly into Panama and cruise between Panama and Costa Rica in 7 days. Otherwise you are looking at 14 days and a lot of it is at sea or kind of bad ports in Mexico and Central America (although I liked Antigua Guatemala).
There is some attractive pricing now for certain dates on Vacations To Go. I've used them both for researching and booking cruises (I am a cruise newbie also). Of course also contact your favorite travel agent as well as the the cruise line and see if they are matching the price with some on board credits or other bonuses.

If you are looking for the most time in port which is what I think you mean then go to any travel web site, say expedia and search for PC cruises and then look for itineraries. This will tell you what you need to know.

Dayenu, I have also recommended that to people who just want to see the canal and are not into cruising or don't have as much time.
btw my "floating Las Vegas hotel" 3-day repositioning coastal cruise was very nice on Princess. Food was very good (too bad for my waistline) and we won the last day's final trivia and the bottle of bad champagne.
Plus great weather in Vancouver, and flew back that same night.
