My husband and I are taking a cruise around Italy. I do not care for any of the ship's shore excursions to Rome. Has anyone experienced using a private company for this ? I know there are several and some prices are based on how many are taking the tour. Which one(s) are the best, most reliable and reasonable. I have been to Rome before but my husband hasn 't.

There are certainly companies that will pick you up in Civitavecchia and drive you into Rome, but it's hugely expensive. You can take the train on your own and do it yourself very easily for a fraction of the cost. That's what I recommend.
Pick a couple of places that you really want to see (the Forum, the Colosseum, for example) and just go. They are easy to reach from the main train station. And you can hit the Capitoline Museum at the same time. (It will be cheaper with a Roma Pass, which I would use first at the Colosseum to avoid the lines.) These sights are all within walking distance of each other, and they make a nice introduction to ancient Rome.
